XP please help with car seat

I recently double checked the manual for our car seat. I found that the max height for rear facing is the child's head one inch below the top of the seat. It's a Britax Roundabout. Sure enough DS's head is less than an inch from the top of the seat.

DS will be a year old on Friday and he's about 28lbs. I could have him face forward, but I don't want to. I was going to run over to BBB or BRU today to get a new seat. I was just comparing models on the Britax website and it seems as if the rear facing max shoulder height is 16.25 on the model we have. The highest rear facing max should height is only 16.75. I don't know my son's exact shoulder height (he's napping, so I can't measure him now). I don't think purchasing a whole new car seat is worth it for half an inch. Am I being forced to turn him around!?

I realize I can look into other brands, but I love our Britax and they are always so highly recommended.

  • I hate to say it, but it sounds like you might need to find a different brand.  It sounds like you have a long torso'd son.  (who is adorable BTW) I have a True Fit by Learning Curve.  It will accomodate children up to 50".  There is no shoulder height requirement.  It consistantly receives one of the highest safety ratings.  It couldn't have been easier to install.  We are sooooo happy we got it!  GL

  • The Cosco Scenera also has a tall shell. We have the Safety 1st Air and it also has a tall shell.

  • You should be fine with another rear-facing seat. My DD is almost 3, and she can fit fine rear-facing in her Marathons and Roundabout 50. The seat is outgrow rear-facing with 1" of shell left above the head, so try him out in one at the store and see how it looks.

However, the True Fit is an awesome seat as well, so you either way you should be fine.

I would disagree on the Cosco Scenera. We have two of those as our extra seats for DH's and my parent's car and without measuring, I would say DD is pushing the 1 in from the top limit already. The base is narrow too so she's doesn't seem to have anywhere to put her legs. She was 34 1/4 inches last week at the pedi. I have a Evenflo Triumph Advance in my car and she still seems to have a few inches in that one still and has plenty of room for her legs to spread out. I was hoping to RF until 2, but I'm going to have to turn her around very soon because of the Scenera's and we can't afford two new carseats.
