Baby Signing

I would like to do it with A, but have no idea where to start.

For those of you that have, or are going to sign, when did you start?  Did you use any DVD's or books to help?  How do I get started?

TIA and sorry about all my questions today.

Re: Baby Signing

  • I have been using this since G was 2 months old.....(the baby signing time dvd collection), she watches it everyday and loves it...and I practice signs with her for example- All done, eat, water, more

  • I have been thinking about this as well.  Thanks for posting!
  • My MIL got me a basic infant sign language book when Rowen was born.  I'm not sure what it was called though.  I started signing to Rowen just as a part of daily activity.  He would only sign a few words, the ones that I would practice with him the most.  He would ALWAYS sign more and please.  He even signed please for years after he talked, he would just sign it when he said it.  More came in very handy when he started eating though.

  • I starting teaching Zach some signs, but we only started a few months ago.  I didn't use anything special.  I learned a few signs from friends and started showing them to him.  It took him a little while to get the first one but after that he picked it up really quickly.  His speech isn't where it should be yet so I wanted to give him another way to communicate with me.  It amazes me how well he uses it!

We have this book.  I started (inconsistently) around 4 months.  I am the only one who does it with her.  She doesn't sign back yet but she does get excited when I sign "mama milk."  I have just started getting more consistent with it, and I have asked the new sitter to work on them because she seemed enthusiastic.  There was a discussion about it on EFF recently and several people said around 9 months was about the time their child started signing back, some said even later (some earlier) so I have not given up yet.

This! I love baby signing time & the regular one. I learned all the signs I know from using these series at work in college.

  • I started signing with her about 6 weeks ago. I mostly sign 'milk' when I'm about to feed her. I also sign, Mommy, Daddy, & All done.

Going to be adding food words. (eat, more, food names) bath, change (diaper), cat, play.

I just have a regular sign language dictionary from a long time ago. I look up whatever I need :)

  • We were lucky that they used the signing at Gavin's daycare.  We bought a baby signing DVD but never watched it.  So we just picked up the ones that he used there and did them at home.  (I did add "I love you")

I think it's really important to just be consistent and do it over and over, all the time.  Even though they may not use the signs back for months, they are learning.  I would sign and say "I love you" to G and one day I signed it to him and he said "I love you mama"...*heart melting*
