stripping diapers & detergent

I've been stripping DD's diapers all day. She only wears at night - but they turn her bright red after a couple hours, so the whole night in 1 dipe is not good for her.

I'd been using CC and need to switch.  We've tried Planet, 7th Gen, Charlies, CC, & Publix (store brand) F&C.  They all irritate her.  I really don't think it's my wash routine because I make sure to do extra rinses - and feel like I actually go overkill on the rinses & being sure to use enough or not too much detergent.

Suggestions?

Re: stripping diapers & detergent

  • What are you stripping them with?

I found, esp w/ prefolds, that I would get mineral build-up that would cause redness.  I used calgon and lots of hot water and that seemed to do the trick.

I have samples of RocknGreen if you want to try some before buying?

  • I would think it might could be too little detergent or maybe too much?  I mean how often do you wash?  That would only be like 7 diapers a week.

  • Well....we also use them to clean up pee accidents which seem to happen multiple times daily lately.   Sigh... :(

But lately, I'm doing the dipes once a week lately.

  • So maybe it's just ammonia buildup?

But what are you doing to strip them?

I'm using Dawn Ultra (all I could find) and seriously hot water (I boiled, plus turned up the hot water heater all the way).   Hmmm....I might have to try Calgon if this doesn't work.

And I'd love a sample if you have one to spare! Thanks!

  • Yes, I have a sample to spare... or I could scoop some out of my bag for you!  We should get together soon anyway, so I can give it to you then.

I never had to use dawn... I've always used RnG and it's pretty clean rinsing, so I never worried about detergent build-up (but I know that if there are suds when you rinse, that's a good sign there is detergent build-up).

I think sometimes with the ammonia, just making sure there is enough water moving through/saturating/rinsing the diapers can make a big difference.  I don't know if you have a FL or not (when less water tends to cause more problems).  I would think lots of washing and rinsing would help either way.  Otherwise, I found Calgon at Publix.

  • My guess is you need to wash more often.  All that pee sitting around for a week will likely cause ammonia build up.  I would do an overnight soak in Rockin Green. It really helped the first time I used it.  I have some and also some BG detergent and calgon.  If you want to borrow anything I'm right down the street!

  • Maybe you need to add some vinegar into your wash routine also?  I don't do it normally but when dealing with stink I add either Calgon or vinegar for a couple weeks and it seems to help.

Thanks! You girls are awesome!  i guess i've just become lazy about washing the dipes because everything else is backed up, too! :)
