How often does your LO nurse?

How old is your LO and how often do they nurse?

My MIL is making me feel bad again about DD nursing every 2 hours (during the day).  She acts like it's such a burden and inconvenient.  I never complain about it or talk about it negatively, so I guess it must be a burden on her?  I know it shouldn't bother me, but I do wonder if it's normal at almost 8 months...

Re: How often does your LO nurse?

  • My DS does this also and my mom said it was odd also. I will say the pedi said he'd prefer he ate every 4 hours. I haven't ever felt by pedi was very supportive of BF so I saw a LC to find out how normal it was, she said some babies are just snackers. She said most seem to eat full meals and go 4 hours at this age but some don't. She said as long as he's happy and gaining weight to let him be. I listened to her and then switched peditricians.

  • My DS is still nursing 5-6 times per day at 1 year.  That works out to just under every 3 hours.  He is growing fine, I don't see why you would need to reduce your nursing sessions.

  • My LO is 3.5 months and nurses about every 3 hours, sometimes 2.5 but mostly 3 hrs. Sometimes he actually goes 3.5 if he has a good nap.   I do remember my LC say that some nursing sessions are snacks and some are full meals.  How long is he nursing for? Only thing I would be concerned with is if he's getting to your hind milk.  I wouldn't let your MIL make you feel bad esp if you don't mind.  It's amazing how everyone has an opinion...esp when they have no experience nursing and you haven't complained.  You could try a pacifier If you wanted to try and stretch him a little longer between feedings, I would start small like 15min at a time and see how he does.  HTH Good luck! :)
