3rd Trimester

What's the best way to organize baby clothing?

I am SO overwhelmed right now with only 7.5 weeks left! We have a decent sized closet for the baby but I also want to use it for storage baskets and things. We have a dresser which has plenty of space for clothes...

From experience can you tell me what the best way is to organize her clothes? I would assume to hang matching outfits and dresses and then fold onesies and sleepers? Maybe put a couple bin organizers in top drawer for socks/bows. Any help would be appreciated! =)

Thanks!

  • Ooohhh good question!!

Right now I have folded piles of washed baby clothes organized by size. We are still waiting on the arrival of our dresser though... advice from already mommies on what worked for them would be great.

  • I bought those shoebox size clear containers (I think they're 6 qt?) for DD #1's dresser. I used it to divide socks, hats, hair stuff, tights, bibs, etc since those items tend to migrate around. I also used them in another drawer for pants, pjs, onesies, etc. I like to have everything separated and not falling over into each other's piles. I hung up dresses, outfits, jackets.

Her changing table has shelves underneath that I used for burp cloths, blankets, extra bedding, washclothes. The system worked out great for me and I plan on dividing everything up again for this time around.

  • I have a changing table/dresser/hutch thing with a side cabinet

anyway, Top drawer has all onesies and jammies/sleep sacks since you access those the most and may be changing clothes in the middle of the night so you need quick access.

2nd drawer is all shirts and pants and bottom is extra blankets and what not.

I have another tall dresser and the top drawer has his socks/mittens/hats etc.

I hang all nice matching outfits

  • Here's what works for us...

On top of his dresser - bin with diapers and wipes; small bin with easy to access toiletries stuff (lotion, saline drops, nose thing, thermometer) + changing pad.

    Dresser -
top drawer - small bin with socks on one side; undershirts on the other
    middle drawer - jammies
    bottom drawer - pants
side cabinets - burp clothes, sheets, blankets, other misc. linens

Closet - we have an organizer installed so it's split down the middle
left side - all coordinating outfits are hung together (shirts/overall combos) + any misc. overalls/one piece outfits
right side - short sleeve shirts followed by long sleeve shirts

  • I have a dresser that has 6 drawers.  I put the separated them by 0-3, 3-6, and 6-9.  I hung the nice matching sets. I also have a separate drawer for sock and bibs, jammies, and blankets.

The towels are in the changing table drawer.

    Good Luck!

  • For me everything that DS is wearing is in his bureau. Everything that is too big or is the next size up I keep hanging in the closet until he fits into it. For socks, I went down the kitchen aisle at Target and got a couple of the little storage baskets(3 for like $2) They are in the flatware caddy section. I also use these for pacifiers and for organizing his forks and spoons.

  • Of course it's up to you! But here's what worked for us:

-hang the majority of things: dresses, sleepers, onesies, sweaters

-"fold" (aka just put in the drawer) pants

-small bins for hair clips, socks, shoes, etc

  • IN THE CLOSET: (it had one rack for shoes, then two racks for hanging clothes) since her clothes are so tiny we decided to add a rack to make the most use of the closet space.

I purchased some cute dividers from etsy that say Newborn, 0-3, 3-6, 6-9, 9-12.  All of her clothes are hanging up according to size.  I also purchased baby hangers that match the colors of her nursery and put clothes that were not on hangers on those.

IN THE DRESSER: (it has 5 drawers)

1st drawer has all of her socks.  She has a load of socks so she needed a whole drawer just for her tiny socks alone.

2nd drawer has onesies that are organized according to size.

    3rd drawer has all sleepwear

4th drawer has bibs, burp clothes, caps, mits, headbands, etc

    5th drawer has all blankets

IN THE CHANGING TABLE: (it has 3 drawers and a side cabinet with 2 shelves)

1st drawer has all baby essentials like her pacifier, hygiene bag, nail clipper, comb, medicine dispenser, thermometer, nasal aspirator, and tons of other stuff like that.

2nd drawer is full of NB diapers ready to use or refill her diaper stacks (we have two since her crib bedding came with one and so did her pack and play for our room)

3rd drawer has wipe refills for the wipe warmer and larger size diapers that we got from the shower

1st cabinet shelf has lotions, powder, creams, oils, alcohol, cotton balls, and stuff like that

2nd cabinet shelf has all of her bath products including bath towels

As long as I know where everything is then I think I will be OK.  It's just important to have a place for everything so you know what you have or dont have in case you need to make the purchase.

We didn't hang up anything because her closet is filled with other things. (We have NO storage in this house.) All of her outfits are in a drawer, separated by piles of onesies, pants, tops, and then sleepers. A smaller drawer is for hats, tights, socks, mittens, etc. Another drawer is for crib sheet, another is for flannel receiving blankets, and the other is empty for more clothes. I anticipate putting all her day clothes in one drawer and all the sleepers, which I usually had more of with my other two, in another drawer. Blankets get put into rolls and displayed in the diaper changer.

  • Any newborn or 0-3 sleep n plays, socks, onesies, sleeping gowns that I think we will use right away are washed and folded in drawers along with blankets.

All the bigger clothes are not washed and hung up using the dividers sold at BBB.

I think I will rotate clothes in as they get older and pack them away and wash the new stuff to come in.

I'm sure once they get older too, the more "complete outfits" will be hung just so I can see all the pieces.

    GL!
