3rd Trimester

Heartburn question

I have been having some serious heartburn (who on here hasn't??)...but here's my question/concern.  The back of the Tums bottle says not to take more than 7 within a 24 hour period...and that is just not cutting it.  I need 7 just after breakfast...forget the rest of the day.  I get heartburn from everything...even just water!  Does anyone know if there is something I can take in addition to my measly 7 Tums??  TIA

Re: Heartburn question

  • I've heard mango or papaya extract can be good for heartburn.  I will say that the time I ate a mango and was having some good hb it worked really well.  They sell pills at certain health food stores or even at our organic section of our regular market.

  • I've totally given up on Tums since I've been pregnant. My OB told me to take Pepcid AC and to make sure to take it everyday whether I feel like I need it or not because it helps reduce the amount of acid in your stomach to avoid the reflux. I use the Equate or store brand chewable acid reducing tablets. You can only take two a day but as bad as mine got I usually only need one. They have been a life saver.

  • I was taking zantec but that stopped working.  The only thing that works for me its Prilosec OTC, and sometimes I still get it.

  • I've had some serious heartburn and acid reflux my entire pregnancy. My doctor recommended Mylanta which does seem to help or zantac 75 or 150. Good Luck, I feel your pain.

  • I take 150 Zantac twice a day (and am allowed up to 300 twice a day) plus as many Tums as I want. Your dr can tell you a good dosage for you. My reflux was so bad that not only have I been throwing up the whole PG, but I was aspirating the bile and it was inflaming my chest to a degree that my coughing led my dr to think I had bronchitis and my ribs were bruised from all of the hacking before we connected the dots. Once the PG is over I will have to be on the watch for any permanent damage from the bile. No fun and it definitely made me realize that I should've taken it seriously earlier.

If yours is less serious, you can try papaya enzyme and diet modification as more natural approaches.

  • My doc told me I could take zantac.  I started that when the Tums wouldn't cut it anymore.

  • I take pepcid ac. It's the only thing that has come close to touching my heartburn and every once in awhile I need tums on top of it.  If what they say is true about heartburn = hair I must be having a gorilla.

  • I take Prilosec OTC and still need tums usually once a day or so- taking baking soda can really help if you feel like you've taken enough tums for the day.

When the baby drops, so does your heartburn, so that's something to look forward to! (I'm just experiencing that now)

  • I get awful heartburn as well!! It is the worst! One thing works wonders for me and that is Heartburn Tea by Earth Mama Angel Baby. You can either get it from Babies R Us or their website: www.earthmamaangelbaby.com (i think that's their site).

It's the best! I also enjoy their 3rd tri tea as well!

    Good luck!
