18mo appt stats, etc... for people who like that kind of stuff, lol

We had the twin's 18mo appt today...

Gray =
24lbs (25th percentile)
33.5? tall (75th percentile)
48cm head (50th percentile)

Gibby =
32lbs 11oz (97th percentile)
34? tall (90th percentile)
51cm head (over 97th percentile)

The doc agreed that we should have Gray evaluated for speech/receptive language delay, even though he might catch up on his own- best to have it checked out and if he does qualify, get help early on rather than later.

Gray was bouncing off the walls in the exam room and needed to be pinned down for the exam? the doctor said he does seem on the way to a possible ADHD diagnosis later on ? which I wouldn?t be shocked by at all. Both my niece and nephew have AD and Gray has showed signs since early on.

He says Gibby is doing well ? we have his eye doc follow up on the 6th ? and he will probably be a pirate (eye patch) for a while to correct the lazy eye, since it hasn?t improved at all in the 3 months since we last saw the eye doc. That?s gonna be interesting!

Gibby continues to be my chunk - but Gray is closing the gap a LITTLE bit :) They had a blast running around the exam room- were so cute playing tag in a way - the doc was impressed that they played TOGETHER at this age - and I laughed b/c they rarely do! They were showing off for the doc :)

  • I am curious about the speech/language delay. Is he saying any words?

My son is 17 months old and only says about 3 words all which are very new. Are you concerned or do you think he is just a little late in speaking?

Gray really doesn't say any words. He has said "mama" and "dada" with meaning- but only a few times... and I thought he used to say "more" but he hasn't said it in at least a month or so.

He does sign a few things: more, please, all done, milk, eat....

He won't point out body parts - but will raise his feet if i ask where they are (or where do his socks go)... he doesn't follow directions very well - could be b/c he's all over (we are facing a possible ADHD diagnosis with him I think), but I don't think he understand that much.

Comprehension is more important than expressive language at this age.  I wasn't worrying about Gray until maybe the last month b/c he's showing a lot of the same behaviors my niece showed at that age (she had a severe receptive delay).... so I really started to pay attention and decided that I wanted him evaluated- and thankfully, my pedi said the same thing after we talked today.

It's so hard with twins- b/c you are always comparing one to the other... funny enough, in early months I was worried about Gibby b/c he didn't give much eye contact, didn't babble until really late, and was always behind Gray by a lot with gross motor skills.... and then he caught up - and then just went WAY past Gray with everything.... and while I know all kids do things in their own time- i also know the signs of receptive language delays ... so i'm glad he'll be evalated - and hopefully catch up really fast.

  • Glad to hear you are being so proactive about having him evaluated!  I used to teach (until millions of CA teachers were laid off) and it's so hard when as a teacher you can see that the child needs intervention but the parents are resistant.  Early intervention is KEY and it sounds like you are open to it and looking for help and answers early on which is SO awesome!  That is going to help him to be so much more successful in the future ;)

My son is 22 months and doesn't talk very much.  MOST of his words he's picked up recently.  He identifies objects and some body parts and says Mom and Dad but I feel like he's behind when I compare him to my friends kids who are close to his age.  I have noticed he's picking up a lot more words lately, but most of what he says is not communcating wants/needs, mainly just identifying objects or people.  We'll see what the doc says at his 2 year appointment, I'm trying to make a list of what he says.

Thanks for sharing with us, keep us posted ;)

  • That's interesting about the language stuff.  I have really been wondering about that stuff as well since Ava has started talking a lot and saying the following words: Light, Hot, mama, dada, baba and Gracie does a lot of talking and babbling to herself but no real words that you can understand altough she has just started to say Hot like her sister.  We have a gas stove heater in our house so Hot is a big word, as the look through the fence gate thing at it.  It's so hard to not compare them!
