Two Under 2

DH goes back to work tomorrow - Advice Please

I am absolutely dreading tomorrow. I never realized how difficult two kids is until I had them. These past two weeks have only been going well because there has always been at least my hubby around to help take care of one of them.

With him going back tomorrow, I am terrified.

It seems like DD already knows I am preoccupied with the baby because she is getting into things and starting ripping up things while I'm feeding/diapering him that she's never even looked at before.

Does anyone have advice on what to do with DD (14 months) while diapering and feeding DS (2 weeks)? My mom suggested putting DD in her crib so she doesn't get into things, but I know she'll scream the entire time and I'd like to avoid that. Any other suggestions?

  • I have a Joovy playpen that is still big enough for DS #1.  It is much larger that a PNP and is able to hold him and a bunch of toys for him to play with.  This way I am able to contain him and see him / talk to him at the same time.  If things get really bad, I throw on an Elmo DVD to keep him occcupied... Not the greatest thing in the world, but sometimes you just have to do whatever you can.

    GL!

  • When I only had two I would read books to DS1 while I was nursing and that kept him occupied.  When I was changing DS2 I would ask DS1 to get me things, even if I didn't need them, so he felt like he was helping me..... DS1 and DS2 were 20 months at the time, but I did the same with my daughters and they were 16 months apart.  DD liked to help even more than DS.... she also became very attached to her own baby doll as she "changed" and "fed" her doll as I changed and fed the baby (she was about 18 months old when she started that) GL!

  • I know it's a little late, but can you babyproof an area of the house tonight? We have our family room set up with all of DS's toys and it's 100% babyproofed so I can do anything without having to watch him all the time.

  • i just close my eyes & pretend it's not happening. ha- seriously.

everything is pretty much toddler-proof, so it's just a safe mess that i need to clean.

she's got a room full of toys that she has full access to & she still has more interest in unrolling the toilet paper than playing- so it is what it is!

you can do it! good luck :)

This! Our living room/kitchen is all babyproofed, and I can see him where ever he is in those rooms so that he can play while I'm with DS2.  I also occasionally  throw on some cartoons while I feed DS2, but that really only keeps him entertained for 10 minutes or so.

I've been meaning to PM you anyways to ask if you could send me that suggested amount of wake time chart that you used to post.  I'm already forgetting when DS1 started to be awake longer.  If you get a chance, that'd be great!

    5 months 2 hours - 2.25 hours
    Late 5 months/early 6 months 2.25-2.5 hours
6.5 - 7 months 2.75-3 hours. Some are getting more.
    8 - 10 months 3 - 4 hours. Some are getting more.
11 - 12 months 3.5 -4.5 hours. Some are getting more if moved early to 1 nap
