Sophie the Giraffe hype

Do you buy into it?  I mean, is it actually worth the $17 for one teether?

  • I've heard great things about it, but we never bought it for DS, and he survived!

  • It depends on the kid.  My son loved Sophie as a baby and still loves her now.  I think it was worth the $17.

If you don't want to spend the money, there are plenty of different teething toys to choose from.

  • I bought one for dd when she was about 8 months old. She really loved it but I don't think it is a necessity.

  • A necessity--of course not. But, Sophie is something that we were ok with splurging on. We are not into plastic toys, so that leaves wood, cloth, and things like the natural rubber that Sophie is made out. Plus everything must have an eco-friendly paint or be unpainted and we prefer things that are not Made in China or at least have some sort of production that we know is closer to being ethical and fair trade. Sophie is in line with the prices of things made with those guidelines. Our strategy is to have just a few toys that we feel really comfortable with rather than lots of things that feel like compromises to us. So, if one $17 Sophie takes the place of three $5 synthetic teethers, it all comes out the same.

If you like the Sophie idea, but not the price--Vulli's Chan, Pie, and Gnon are the same material but cheaper.

  • We bought one for my son, but he wasn't really impressed.  Not sure if we'll get one this time around or not.
  • I can only say how great it was/is for my son.  He chewed on that thing non-stop and it was the only one good enough to get those back molars.  I also bought them for all my friends' babies and they love Sophie as much as I do.  Or so they say :)  My mom made fun of me for buying her, but after seeing how much easier teething was with her, she now buys them for everyone she knows who is having a baby, too!

  • We bought it and I loved it for my 2nd baby! He had a terrible time with his teeth and Sophie was the perfect fix for his little gums. (Even if it is crazy to spend that much, it worked wonders at our house!)
  • I pulled it out of the box and thought "wow that was one expensive dog toy!"

I gave it to DD and she was glued to it for at least 8 months!! We couldn't go anywhere without it. She hated pacifiers but you showed her Sophie and she instantly smiled and grabbed it. It really was instant and I was surprised  (especially when I have spent over $50  on pacifiers!

She still chews on it when in the car (she only has 8 teeth and still teething).

We have a back up incase it gets lost or so LO#2 can have his own.

  • Lurking but about a year ago I was babysitting my niece and she was chomping on her Sophie and rammed the legs down her throat and I had to pull it out because she was choking. It wasn't a big deal because I was right next to her but had I walked out of the room to get her something she would've been choking for much longer. I looked into it and I guess a lot of people run into this problem.

  • I have Sophie on my registry, but I'm not sure we'll purchase it myself if we don't get it as a gift. It certainly won't be at the top of my to-buy list.

  • LO got one as a Christmas gift, but I probably would not have bought one with my own money
