2nd Trimester

Caffine while pregnant....

I don't drink coffee but I love my diet soda.  Is anyone else having a hard time giving it up cold turkey?  I have def. cut back but I have tried and can't cut it out completely.  Is anyone else like this?  I normally drink diet caffine free but sometimes I just have to have some.

Re: Caffine while pregnant....

  • I don't drink coffee either but I gave up caffeine in my first tri, but now I need Diet Dr. Pepper or real Dr. Pepper. I probably have the equivalent of 2 cans a day. I cannot stay awake and chase a toddler on no caffeine.

ETA: I didn't cut it out with #1 and was never told to, and she is just fine!

  • It was very hard to give it all up. ?I know ladies on here say its okay to have some, however my doc is firm on the no?caffeine. ?I am pretty used to it now, but it was hard at first. ?Good luck!

  • meh, you will get a lot of alarmist responses on this board.  personally, i drink a coffee and a diet soda every day.  yes, even with the artificial sugar (gasp!).  i couldn't cut it out completely, though, i was not drinking much of the diet soda in first tri....i've become more lax in the second trimester and have been drinking almost one every day.  i haven't exceeded my OB's daily caffine limitation....though, i've gotten flack from other bumpies by not avoiding artificial sweeteners.

  • I have about 2 half cups of coffee a week and maybe 2 sodas a week.

I used to love Diet Pepsi but have cut it out 100% as my husband has very strong feelings about artifical sweetners (not for me, but for the baby) and I am confused by the research on using them while pregnant and have decided to avoid them.

  • i have a dr. pepper about every other day and use artificial sweetners with my tea that i drink if we go out.  i was told to drink and use in moderation. i also try to make sure that i drink about 20 oz. more water during the day on days i have my dr. pepper.  i did this same thing with my 1st and he has been just fine.  i did try to cut back and just couldn't.
  • My doctor said caffiene is fine, just no more then 2 more servings a day.  I have a small cup of coffee in the morning and sometimes a soda with caffiene in the evening.

  • I gave up caffeine while TTC and while in the first trimester. Now I probably don't drink it more than once a week, but sometimes I just have to. I have a cup of coffee or latte when I feel like I need a pick me up, but just make sure I get the size that stays under 200 mg a day.

  • I gave up the diet drinks for the artificial sweeteners but do indulge in a coke or pepsi almost daily. It't the only thing that is keeping the migraines away.

  • I gave up almost all caffeine during first tri but have a cup of tea a day in 2nd tri, and an occasional soda.  My OB says 200 mg of caffeine a day is fine, and usually I get nowhere near that, so I think it's fine.  I try to avoid artificial sweetener so I try to avoid diet coke, but every once in a while I indulge, and I don't think a tiny bit will hurt.

  • Thanks ladies you make me feel more human. :)
  • I used to drink 3 cups of super strong coffee and 1-2 redbulls a day (thanks nursing school) before I found out I was pregnant.

I now have 1 cup of tea a day (OK, occasionally 2)... I'm thinking I'm doing pretty good.  My Dr said I can have 1-2 cups of coffee a day (though I'm pretty sure he didn't mean as strong as I made it before).

This. The whole artificial sweetners thing makes me avoid them if at all possible. If I have soda (maybe 1x/week) then I have the real stuff.

Coffee, on the other hand, I drink almost daily (either a teeny amount of regular, like a 1/4 cup, or I'll stick to decaf).  My OB said regular is fine though, this is just what I am comfortable with.

  • I drink a cup of coffee in the morning and no other caffeine during the day. If I don't drink any coffee in the morning, then I'll drink a Coke later on. I do need some form of caffeine though!

  • I gave up coffee at 6 weeks - but only because it became unappealing to me! In a bizarre twist though, for my entire life I've hated sodas like coke, diet coke, etc. I only drank sprite, which is caffeine free. Since becoming pregnant I cannot STAND drinking sprite and can't get enough diet coke! So, yes. I'm drinking it. At home, we buy the caffeine free version, but when we go out to eat, or to someone's house, I'm not going to kill myself over consuming a little caffeine here and there!

  • i have 1-2 dr. peppers a day.
  • I gave up caffeine cold turkey once I knew I was pregnant.  I used to have 3 cups a day and went right to 1 decaf coffee in the morning and that's it.  It's never been that hard on first or second pregnancy but I can say that once I gave birth, the first thing I requested was a nice, tall hot coffee!

I drink tea everyday (and I did with my daughter). My daughter turned out wonderful! In moderation it is fine. How could you use artificial sweetenersDevil

  • With my first pregnancy I was a saint and didnt drink any caffeine.  I have been really lapse this time around and give in at least once a week for some Ice Tea or a Coke.

  • I gave up my daily coffee with the bfp, but I do have an occasional cup or a dr pepper. I'm not stressing about a little caffeine, but I don't do the diet drinks at all because of the artificial sweeteners.

  • i've given up all artificial sweeteners, and switched to mainly caffeine free soda, but every now and then i have a fully caffeinated pepsi, and i enjoy it.  a can of soda only has about 25 mcgs of caffeine, and most doctors say as long as you stick to under 200 per day you're good.

  • I quite caffeine cold turkey as soon as I found out I was pregnant. "Cold turkey" is accurate because I used to drink Diet Coke religiously! I had horrible headaches for a couple of days and was even more exhausted but I certainly lived. DH is very adamant that I don't drink any caffeine while pregnant and I'm fine with that. It's a small price to pay for our baby's health, IMO.

  • I drink my real coffee nearly every day.

I keep my caffeine intake under 300 mg/day, which is the commonly accepted recommendation.

I love it :) The reason I cut down it just because I'm really not sure how much caffiene is in my coffee- I have good days and bad ones, and on the bad ones I don't feel bad about having a coffee and a coke. It's actually kind of neat to feel the baby responding to my half cup of coffee now.

I know some pregnant martyrs who aren't even drinking hot chocolate- they're not fun to be around.

  • This post and the replies made me feel much better. Im in my first pregnancy and I have had a problem giving up soda. I drink 1 to 2 cups a day.

Agreed - I drink two cups of coffee a day and the occasional soda too.  The horror!  A regular 16 oz. (medium) Dunkin' Donuts coffee has 206 mg of caffeine in it.   I still love the taste of coffee and with all of the other things to worry about with pregnancy, I've never given it a second thought.  :-)

  • My doctor said that I can have up to 160mg of caffeine a day.  I'll have a small coffee from DD (each has 129 mg) maybe 3 or 4 times a week.  On those days I'll make sure to not eat or drink anything else with caffeine.  I have cut out all artificial sweetners.  I've always though the ingredients to most of them have been shady, so I just don't want to take any chances.  I don't begrudge anyone who does though.  It's all about what you're personally comfortable with.  I am surprised with how many people can get judgemental when they see me drinking a small cup of coffee. I'm following the directions of my doctor who has a medical degree.  I think it was a lot more common a few years ago to tell people to not drink ANY caffeine.

  • I limit myself but def haven't given it up. You are allowed up to like 200mg a day. a can of soda is only like 30ish mg. I just try to limit myself to one a day.

  • I drink caffeine daily.  My consumption is between 35-150 depending on whats going on that day.  My ob's (the practice I go to has 5 ob's) have all said that as long as I keep it at 200 mg max then they see no problem with it.

Baby is perfectly fine and continues to do well at every appointment.

  • you're allowed 300mg a day so why give it up if you are allowed to have it? i still have my starbucks every 2-3 days and don't feel the least bit guilty of it!
  • I still drink it pretty much everyday, but I only have one to two drinks. They say you can have up to 200mg/day and a coke has about 40mg I believe. I work 3am-3pm so there is no way I could go without it!
