2nd Trimester

I forgot to post about this last week...i asked a ? that grossed out my OB!

I had an appt last week.   I'm a preschool teacher(I'm the inclusion teacher..I work in 4 classrooms in my building...it's a large public preschool building... we have 38 preschool classrooms)

Well, a couple classes have had lice outbreaks(happens a lot in the winter with all the winter hats and hoods) Luckily, my rooms have been spared so far.

I mentioned it to my OB and asked her if by chance I happened to get lice was it safe for me to use lice shampoos and treatments.   She said it would be okay but I could tell she was completely grossed out.

In the meantime, I don't plan on wearing my hair down at school anytime soon!   I'll be sporting a ponytail for a very long time!!!!!

  • I teach 2 and 3 year olds with special needs and had a little girl in my class that came back with lice every week for a month at the beginning of the year! I work in a low income area which means that often times my parents have a harder time buying the treatments and sprays (required for them to come back to school). Luckily the remaining students in my class were boys with short hair. I have very long hair but always wear it up at work because of this fear. When it was in my class I used tea tree oil shampoo and conditioner and even put some I my leave in conditioner (since tea tree oil is in the all natural lice treatment). I talked to my OB about it and she said that I should not use the over the counter lice treatment without calling her first.... Many of them are very bad for you and baby. I never got it and still check all of my students hair once a week and wear my hair up.
  • Lice is an occupational hazard when you are a teacher.  I am a teacher as well and every year there is a breakout.  I use tea tree oil as a way to prevent getting it.  I use the concentrated oil with my regular shampoo along with wearing my hair up.  I have to say, I find it works! :)

  • I actually got it once from i believe a airplane. I didn't have it when i left FL to go to California and then 2 weeks into being in San Francisco I had it. My hair was also down to my waist then and it was a pain.

  • thanks for the advice about the tea tree oil!      I'll have to get some before the winter break is over.

I know lice is an occupational hazard for teachers.   I just thought it was funny that the OB was grossed out by lice!
