3rd Trimester

Another vent, because I'm venty

My NST was scheduled for yesterday but I couldn't get in because all the beds were full, even in the reserve wing. I called today and they're still completely full and said I could come in at 9 PM. This isn't a big deal for me since I'm very close the hospital and will def be up still.

I'm just nervous that the entire L&D ward has been full for two days. I've been having contractions for the last 24 hours. They're still not super close or getting into a real pattern but they're anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes apart most of the time and my back is killing me. What happens if they're full and I go into labor? Do I get sent to another hospital?

  • If you go into labor there then stand your ground. Tell them you're not leaving and if there is anyway they can discharge someone who has had several days to recoup...then awesome sauce. You'll wait till they clean the room. Or they can move some of the post partum moms to another floor. My hospital has done this when the ward was crowded.

  • You should ask about that while you're there getting your NST.

I dont' have a clue what they would do here...

    Only hospital for HOURS.

  • I feel your pain, Im actually in that situation right now! regular contractions although I am supposed to be induced starting 3 hours ago and yet they are too full (see labor and delivery vent) These hard pregnancies are not fun and with labor getting so close I really hope they have the room for you that they dont seem to have for me!

  • I am delivering at a hospital that has a 32 bed labor and delivery unit. Then they also have a 14 bed unit for high risk patients that are there on bed rest. I delivered in ds in the high risk unit (at 34 weeks was there for two weeks prior) at 1130pm. They moved me at 3am to an over flow unit 3 floors above... it sucked! I had to share a room with another woman who had a baby.... my baby was in the NICU but she had her baby in the room with us. And it had an adjoining bathroom with the two women in the room next to us! I was given a box of antibacterial wipes and told to clean the toilet before and after I used the restroom. Needless to say, my baby was in the NICU and there was not room at our hospital for parents to stay at the hospital with the baby so at 1130pm (exactly 24 hours after he was born) I left against medical advice!

They are now building an edition on the hospital that will be done in November this year. It is a new birthing center and childrens hospital. Supposed to be state of the art... I am pissed I will miss it!

I am sure that they can discharge patients or move them around to fit the new arrivals in. I would ask what their plan is for this when you go in for your NST.

  • Not to scare you in any way, b/c it worked out just fine, but when I went into labor with my first and got to the hospital at 5:30am, all the labor/delivery suites were full (and this is a BIG city hospital with a large maternity dept). For awhile the nurses kept telling me it was no big deal b/c checkout time was 11am and they would be moving moms to post partum rooms, blah blah blah. Well, my daughter was born at 7:19am and yep, I had her right in maternity triage. It was a private room, but tiny, and the head nurse was awesome directing her underlings to gather everything they would need. (B/c my labor was so super fast, she was barking out orders and papers were flying.) She reassured me countless times that everything that was in the LD rooms were in triage too. At that point, I couldn't have cared less - just wanted to get that baby out. Several times over the next 2 days my husband would be in the elevator and overhear hospital staff saying, did you hear about the woman who gave birth in triage?? It was funny but we were bummed that we never got to spend any time in the deluxe suites (some have hot tubs)...the recovery rooms are fine, but not as big.

pomrom, I think we are delivering at the same hospital...

Baby Boy Born 3.15.11. 8lb 9oz, 21.75in. 6 month stats: 20lb 11oz (92%tile), 30.12in.(100%tile - who knew it went over 99th? Which means 100% of other 6 month olds are shorter than mine!)

My thought is if it's an option...use it to your advantage...especially for a high risk mommy.

  • My hospital packet had a paper which stated that if all the maternity rooms were full (here you give birth in the same room you stay in afterward), then I would have to be on another floor, share a room, and my support person would not be allowed to stay overnight. I am really nervous about that, and am praying that it's not busy when I go into labor! Tongue Tied
