Trying to Get Pregnant

WWYD re: sickness - NTTGPR.

I know that no one has a crystal ball but here goes... I had surgery on Dec 1st and am sorta worried I'm having a complication with it. I called the doctor and they said definitely not, that it's just the flu. But I've never had a flu like this before...

Monday morning 6am I started throwing up and had the runs (my brother had it on Sat night so I figured I got it from him.) I stopped throwing up/diarrhea by 2pm latest and just had a bad headache the rest of the day. Tuesday I went to work and felt nauseous all day. By 3pm I had the chills and was achy all over. Came home at 4pm and had a fever of 101. By 8pm last night I had the worst abdominal cramps I've ever had. I couldn't take a full breath. I was doubled over in pain and could barely move. I finally took a percocet at 2am to be able to sleep for a few hours. I woke up at 7am and the fever appears to be gone now. But the abdominal cramping is still in full effect.Maybe not as bad but still really bad that I dont want to move at all.

I've never had a flu bug when I'm not either throwing up or having the runs. Has anyone ever had the flu bug where its just bloating, gas and cramps?

Like I said above, I called my OB's office and they said it couldn't be complications (all sorts of crazy things were running through my mind last night). I don't have a PCP because  my insurance doesn't require it and I've never needed one. So my other option is to just show up at the hospital and see if they will take me.

What would you do? Wait it out? Go to the hospital? I'm so sorry this post is so long but I wanted to get all the info in there.

  • Minus the gas it does sound like it could just be the flu.  Do you have a Walgreen's Take Care clinic near you or an urgent care not attached to a hospital?

  • I'd keep an eye on the fever. If you spike again (over 101.5 or so) then I would call them back. If you can't keep fluids down for about 24 hours, along with a fever, then you go to the ER.

Infection would manifest itself sooner (week or so after your lap) usually. I think it's a stomach virus.

I am so sorry you feel like such crap! If I lived nearby I would come give you some IV fluids.

I will admit the gas and cramps are a bit odd. I would stay on a clear liquid diet for right now, then slowly start back up to soft foods.

I hope you feel better soon!

  • If anything, I would try to go to a alk-in clinic. From there you could see if you really needed to go to the ER. Do you have any blood in your stools? (I know gross)... Or blood in your vomit??

  • Thanks ladies!

Jen, I think I will take your advice to stay on the clear liquids for now and keep an eye on the fever.

Doozer ~ I haven't thrown up or any stools since Monday. I think I cleaned my system out!

If I'm still feeling like crap by late this afternoon I'll try one of those walk in clinics. That is a great idea.

Thanks for all the advice. Since DH is out of town I just didn't have anyone to ask. My mom is overly dramatic too so I don't want to alarm her. Looks like I'll be around TB during the day which is unusual for me. There's always a bright side!

  • This sounds like what I went through when I had what my doctor thought was food poisoning/bacteria.  Even after I had stopped throwing up and going to the bathroom, my stomach was still cramping big time.  My cramps were higher in my abdomen than menstrual cramps, or even "I ate something funny" cramps.

If it is a bacteria, you'll probably need an antibiotic, so I would definitely go in.  If you can't see your regular doctor, maybe a dr at the walk-in clinic would be able to at least confer with him about your surgery/history to get a clear picture of what might be causing this.

    Sorry you're feeling crappy :(  I hope everything's ok!!

  • Aww feel better, Lucy! *hugs*
  • I have no experience with flu symptoms, so I can't be of much help.

I do hope that you get some relief soon!

  • It sounds like flu to me. If you don't have an urgent care clinic or a CVS minute clinic near you, wait it out until tomorrow, if you don't feel better, head to the ER to be safe. If nothing else they will likely want to give you an IV to get some fluids in you. Hope you feel better soon!
