To BFing moms

Just curious what type of nursing items you have purchased or if you already had your baby what you found the most useful. I recently purchased a nursing tank & a nursing bra & just wondering your thoughts on which ones are best! (not necessarily brands just types like tanks, sport type bras, etc)

Re: To BFing moms

  • I know you said not brands necessarily, but I have to say I think Bravado is the best nursing bra company ever! I've been selling baby gear, including nursing bras, for years... and I haven't found another bra on the market to match Bravado. They are pricey, but totally worth it.

My favorite is the Bravado Body Silk. It's super supportive and it fits you as you grow and shrink in size (as long as you don't change hugely).

For nursing tanks, I like the long ones-- who wants a short tank top when their belly is still changing?! GlamourMom makes really nice ones. Some have wider straps to support a bigger bust, if that's something you need (I know I do!)

  • Nursing tanks are fabulous for right away.  Don't get too many, as your size will change once your milk regulates, but do get a few for the first several days.  I used a sports type nursing bra for nights, although this time around, I may just stick with a nursing tank.  Once my size was pretty much set, I'd recommend getting a good quality nursing bra, especially if you plan on going back to work - makes a lot of difference.  I wish I'd spent more on one or two.

You'll need some sort of breast pads.  For disposables, I used Lansinoh ones - they were really great.  Don't bother with the Gerber reusables.  They were horrid.  There are some other good reusable ones out there, though.  Also, get some pure lanolin from Lansinoh for sore nipples.  I liked the Boppy for early on, as well.  We had some latching problems that came with some pretty horrid soreness, and I did like the soothies that we got from Target (forget what brand).  That can come later - hopefully you won't have to deal with that at all!

  • The only thing I have to say is to not get underwire.  And this coming from someone who was bigger than a 38F after her milk came in.  They sell non-underwire for ginornoboobed chicks, and they are a must.  I bought underwire because that's what I always wore.  BIG. MISTAKE.  Ouch.

  • thanks Ladies! I did buy my tank from Target and made sure it was long enough. It covers my bump and beyond now so I'm thinking it will be good after birth! The bra I got was also from Target no underwire and it was on sale so I thought I'd just try it. As PP said I did plan on buying a nicer one once I figure out my actual size and such! I have always had small boobs and I bought a C and it's a bit big but I thought maybe they fit in after milk comes in? If not at least I only spend like 12 on it!

I Def need to get some of the pads and cooling pads! Thanks for reminding me!!

  • Don't forget nursing pads...VERY important.  I would wake up in the middle of the night with a wet stain the size of a dinner plate.
  • I lived in nursing tanks for pretty much a whole year.  I found them so much more comfortable than bras.  I liked the Target ones the best actually, but I did also have a few of the Target sport-type nursing bras which were fine.

Don't forget the nursing pads!  I was a big leaker and had to wear them 24/7 until I weaned DS.  I like Lansinoh the best.

I also found the Boppy indispensible.

  • Pack the pads in your hospital bag! I had them but didn't pack them and by the time I was leaving the hospital I was a wet mess! Also, the Lanolin ointment is good. I loved the nursing tanks paired with a cartigan while I was home with my son. Proper nursing bras are good for going back to work, etc. Haven't tried the cooling pads but I think I will this time. As far as a pump (you didn't really ask but I'll tell you anyway), I had a cheaper evenflo and it was ok but loud and I think it got worn out fast. I got a medela (sp?) Swing and it was a BIG improvement. Hope this helps!
