What do you take when YOU have a cough?

My H and I have had an annoying cough for about a week now. What do you do when YOU are sick. I have been doing the cough syrup and/or Mucinex, but it just isn't working.  Anyone have some secrets they swear by? Blah*cough*blah...TIA!

  • Ricola (the original) works wonders for me

Steam baths to help loosen phlegm

    Hot Lemon and Honey water

Is this a dry cough or a wet one?

  • Ricola in a shot of rum.

Both? Can that be? We can't even get through a sentence without stopping 3x to cough. So annoying!  I have been popping the halls and just ate a spoonful of honey.  I may try some rum.....

  • I usually take Mucinex, but now I'm PG and not taking anything, which really sucks. I'm going on 2 weeks now and no sign of improvement. :(

My mom swears by honey, lemon juice and whiskey which has helped me in the past. Warm apple juice and honey helps DD's cough.

Drinking a lot of teas will help loosen the mucus up. Hot steam showers help a whole lot as well. We use a steam room with a eucalyptus extract mister. It helps as well.
  • This may sound weird but I put Vicks Vaporub on the soles of my feet along with some socks before bed and it almost always makes my cough disappear!  Besides that I like ricola and tea with honey and lemon juice.  I've never taken mucinex or any of that otc stuff though.

Hot Tottie/Toddy as DH calls it. He swears by it as well. I only do it if I'm feeling deathly ill from coughing and I substitute Strawberry Vodka for the whiskey. You only need a shot warmed up a bit and it does work.

I've been coughing a week now myself and last week took some Tylenol Warming syrup thinking mmmm, honey, doesn't sound bad. Needless to say I would rather cough than take that disgusting crap. Dayquil tastes much better.

  • Thanks for all of the suggestions! Last night I even considered going into LO's room and stealing his humidifier.  I decided to just make a doctor's appt. I have a feeling it's a sinus infection.  Oh, I hope it is, so that the meds can make me better. Today is the first day of my vacation and I have big plans. Thanks again!!

Oh, and I am so going to do the Vicks on the feet thing. I do it for my babe, so why not?

  • I don't like taking medicine, so when I get desperate, I usually only have children's medicine around and take that lol Not sure it does much, but it tastes really good!

I normally do herbal/minty tea with a spoonful of honey mixed in.  I take a spoonful before drinking it, and then drink the tea mixed with honey.  I think it works wonders.

I've been drinking a lot of mint green tea with honey and it's not working.  Thanks for all of the suggestions ladies! I may try the hot toddy after I put my LO to bed tonight. Thanks!

  • There was a study done recently that shows honey works better than any cough syrup, and with fewer side effects.

My go-to is tea with milk and honey. Tea with lemon and honey also works. Or just plain ol' honey in a spoon. That and a warm shower/bath.

My mom swears by Ricola and vicks rub.
