Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

XP: If you are PG and still nursing

does your OB want you to quit? I am still nursing 3 - 4 times a day and planned to go until March. My OB told me to quit today because it can up the miscarriage rate. Are you still nursing and when do you plan to quit, if at all?

  • I got pregnant when DS 1 was 18 months and nursed for 4 months more. My OB said it was totally fine.

I had no issues at all. (besides sore nipples!)

  • My OB told me at first to quit. Then my DH (who works with my OB sometimes), asked him again later that evening because I was upset by it, so he asked one of his Midwives that work in the office. She said I did not have to quit, but I ended up having to anyways since DD was not getting enough milk from me and was always hungry. It was a struggle to go to formula (she was only 8 months at the time). She was almost 10 months when I was all done. You milk supply can deplete, it can also change flavors.
  • Unless you've had issues with preterm labor, there's no reason you have to wean just because you are pregnant.  Kellymom.com has some good info on nursing while pregnant that's worth a read.

My midwives were totally fine with my continuing to nurse.  I've known plenty of mamas who have nursed well into pregnancy or even all the way through without issues.  It is true that you can have sore nips (i didn't though), supply dropping, and your milk will change to colostrum at some point.

Quitting makes me want to cry. I'm not ready and LO is definitely not ready. I will read up on Kellymom and get some education on the matter.

  • I quit when DS was around 16 months because I started losing hair.  I throw up all the time throughout the entire pregnancy, so I couldn't keep up with the nutrients for all 3 of us.
