Parenting after 35

It's official: DD2 can't hear.

We have done the tests, seen the doctors and hoped against hope but we know now. Morgan has moderate-severe hearing loss in both ears.We have our next appointment in about 3 weeks to get her hearing aids. I am really sad about it sometimes, it is taking me a while to adjust but we have some great resources here.  So far it looks like there are no other issues and I am glad for that.

I am super busy now with both of my girls and I don't get the bump time I used to at work but I hope everyone had great holidays.

  • I'm so sorry. I hope the hearing aid appointment goes well and your daughter gains some (more) hearing from then on out. If not, you'll still be able to tell her you love her through sign... and in a million other ways. Huge hugs.

  • Sunny,

I'm sorry to hear that and I know it must be a blow, even knowing how well science is helping hearing impaired people. I hope the hearing aids help her and I hope that you are finding the support you need, too.  I took ASL classes in college and I know you'll pick it up quickly, if you're going that route.

Please keep us up-to-date about how she, and Brigid, are doing.   I know you don't have the time to Bump, but you're always welcome here.

Hang in there and have a happy New Year.

  • Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear that. Luckily it's been caught early so she can get the treatment she needs.

  • Hi Sunny,

I've been thinking about you and wondering how you were doing with the 2 girls.  I can't believe Morgan is already over 2 months old!  I am so sorry to be reading this and was really hoping for the better when you first announced it a few weeks back....and i'm sure you are very much aware that the technological advances are incredible now and no matter how advanced her loss of hearing is, there are and will always be a million ways to communicate.  I  wanted to give you big hugs not only for this, but for being such a great mom to two adorable and beautiful girls.  You rock mama!  XOXO

  • Oh no!  I am so sorry, that must be a huge adjustment.  I am happy you caught it so early, and I hope the hearing aids help her!

  • Sunny - big hugs to you, because I know that is not the news you wanted to hear. FWIW, my mom's brother and sister are both deaf. They are amazing people - they both attended Gallaudet University (college for the hearing impaired) and both participated in the deaf olympics and my uncle won a gold medal. I know this is overwhelming right now. One piece of advice (not that you asked....), but when/if you all start to learn ASL, include DD#1. My mom never learned ASL and it had an impact on her relationship with her siblings. Best of luck to you all - there have been amazing advances since the time my aunt/uncle were born.

  • I'm so sorry but so glad you all have pursued this so vigorously.

  • Oh I am so, so very sorry!  But so glad that nothing else seems to be wrong.  I agree with Dana - there are so many ways to tell her how much you love her and words are probably the least of them.
  • I am so sorry for the news. I can't say it any better than the PPs.

  • Thank you all so much for your support. Little miss Morgan has already changed and enriched our lives so much, I am really exited to see what the future holds for all of us us - p.s. my great aunt graduated from Gallaudet too! She lost her hearing from illness but was an amazing lady, as I understand.  Bea, you're awesome and Pepper - congratulations!

  • I so sorry to read about Morgan's hearing problems.  As PP have said, include Bridgit in Morgan's ASL.  As they get older they will like having a secret language that other people can not understand.

  • I'm sorry that you ever had to hear anything other than, "your child is perfectly normal." Let yourself grieve the way you though things would be and you will quickly adjust to your new normal. As so many of the other posters have said, they have amazing advances these days that may allow her to hear some and if not, you will still be able to communicate though ASL. Left Hug

  • Big Hugs but maybe modern medicine can help you. I am sending you lots of prayers! Best of luck and Morgan is so precious and Happy New Year!

This. And FWIW, I went to law school with an amazing guy who had complete hearing loss in one ear and significant loss in the other - he was a star student AND athlete and you'd never have known about his disability until you saw him reading your lips from across the room!  Nonetheless, I'm sorry you have to go through this and am sending you positive thoughts and prayers.  I also love the idea of including your other DD in the sign classes, it will be fun for them to have their own secret code.  Hugs and best wishes for a happy new year.

  • I'm so sorry - I can imagine that if I were in your position it would really suck to learn that. Life with Morgan will still be beautiful and amazing.

FWIW, the head RVT at the hospital I work at is deaf. She has cochlear implants and does everything any other tech does and more. Also, when I was in grad school I took neuroanatomy with the med students. A guy in my study group was deaf. He had someone who helped with translation when he had to do his surgery rotations (sing language - can't read lips with a surgery mask on) and had a little device that made heart sounds accessible to him. He's a family medicine doctor now and doing great.
