3rd Trimester

2 vessle cord and white spot on the heart

Hello,

Im getting nervous. I had an ultrasound at 12 weeks and it showed no signs of downs. My chances were 1 in 10000. The dr said that was good. I had another ultrasound when I was 21 weeks. That showed that I had a 2 vessel cord so now I have to go in for monthly ultrasounds to check growth. This last ultrasound at 27 weeks showed a white spot on the heart which is a marker for downs. My dr says I really dont have anything to worry about, but how cant I be worried? It seems like everytime they look at my baby they find something. By the way, Im not finding out what the babys sex is. I dont know if that makes a difference. Although my dr says I have nothing to worry about she still recommended that I go see a High Risk Pregnancy Dr. I cant seem to find anyone else who had any of these problems but also had a low risk of downs. Anyone have any light to shed on this for me.

Re: 2 vessle cord and white spot on the heart

  • Hi!

My baby girl has a 2 vessel cord and was at high risk for downs. We had an Amnio done to be 100% sure that she did not have downs or any other birth defect that can be associated with 2 v cord (downs is not associated with 2v cord). Im sure you have already researched this but 2v cord puts the baby at a higher risk for heart and kidney issues and for preterm labor.

Our Amnio came back normal and just today we had a fetal echocardiogram done to check for heart development. Everything looks great!

My OB and Perinatologist (High Risk doc) are not worried about the 2v cord. Most babies with this condition are born healthy. They just need to monitor you more closely to make sure the baby is growing on track. So far my baby girl is measuring a little ahead and I have an increased chance of GD bc of my history.

If your doc is not worried I wouldnt be worried. But going to a high risk doctor will really help you and answer all your questions.

Good Luck and PM me if you have any questions.

  • I work with a woman that had a baby with a 2 vessel cord.  They took extra precautions because she was considered high risk for other reasons - her son is 100% fine!

  • Our LO had an echogenic cardiac focus on his heart at 19w. My doctor and our genetic counselor (we were seeing a GC for our 1:160 NTD risk) were not concerned at all. Apparently these bright spots are very common. In the Asian population, something like 30% of fetuses have them. While I am not Asian, it helped me understand what a non-issue this is in the absence of any other risk factors. I asked our dr what the follow-up was and he said nothing. He said if this was the old days when he could withold info, he wouldn't even mention the spot because it is *that* not concerning to him. His phrasing was weird, but I appreciated his sentiment. Because of another issue, I ended up getting a second anatomy scan at 26 weeks and they saw that the spot had already resolved itself.

At this point our risk factors are 1:5000 for DS and 1:1600 for an NTD. Have you been able to meet with a genetic couneslor?

I don't know anything about the double vessel cord thing or how that factors in. I wish you peace as you wait to learn more. It is very hard to have things pile on and not have answers.

  • My baby had a 2-vessel cord and was born perfectly healthy.  She came early (I was induced for pre-e) but it had nothing to do with her cord.  I did get more ultrasounds than normal, one at 28w and another at 34w to monitor growth, but she was right on track both times.  Please try not to worry.  Everything will be okay.  :)

  • My DD#1 (Lucy) was diagnosed with a 2vessel cord at our 20 week ultrasound.  My doctor wasn't worried at all - but of course I looked it up on the internet and then my mind ran rappent with things that "could" be wrong with her.

All my doctor did was NST (non-stress tests) from week 34-40.  Lucy was born a very healthy baby & not small at all...8 lbs 11 oz :)  Many many babies are born with 2 vessel cords and are completely healthy!!  Good luck to you & I will say an extra prayer that your little one continues to stay healthy!

  • I had a similar problem but with my son's kidney (a white spot.) I had to go to a High Risk Dr. and she really helped put my mind at ease. If you only have one marker for downs, I wouldn't worry. And, if you are only going back for sonograms every 6 weeks, thats a good thing too. I'd worry more if the doc wanted you to come in every 2 weeks.  I just know that being pregnant is the most stressful and worrisome time of my life! I'm sure it will all work out fine. My mother-in-law is a doctor and said that they have to be over cautious in this day in age in case of lawsuits.
  • At our 20 week ultrasound they found a bright spot on Z's heart and started talking down syndrome and amnio's.

    Z was born perfectly healthy.

  • I was told that we had a two vessel cord at our 20 week anatomy scan. We had a follow up to verify the two vessels with a level 2 ultrasound machine and it was confirmed. To make sure that baby's heart was fine- hearts and Kidneys are often affected with the two vessel issue as well as other genetic abnormalities- we had an echocardiograph done at 24 weeks. Our baby's heart was perfect. We have been having monthly ultrasounds to make sure she's growing because we were told that 2 vessel cords can lead to small growth/birth weight, but at my last ultrasound baby was perfectly average and even said based on the numbers, she is in the 70% for weight at her gestational age, which is fantastic.

Don't worry- it's a pretty common thing to have a two vessel cord. I am sure your baby will be just fine!
