High-Risk Pregnancy

Question for girls with high blood pressure

So I've been battling high blood pressure for about a month now in the hospital twice.  Within the last few days I've noticed my feet and hands get incredibly uncomfortable like very dry and stiff feeling to the point I can hardly bend my fingers. It only seems to really happen though at night while asleep.  Has anyone else had this?  To me it seems like its swelling but I thought being on bedrest stuck in bed all the time swelling should be going down not up.  I was just wondering if this is blood pressure related should I call my doctor now or wait till my next appointment to mention it.  I've taken my bp when its bothering me and its usually somewhere in the 130's over 80's which for me has been my normal bp lately.

Re: Question for girls with high blood pressure

  • I also have really high blood pressure and have been in and out of the hospital over it.  My swelling also gets worse at night and when I first wake up.  Bad enough that I can't grasp anything in my hands because my fingers won't bend.  Swelling pools in your face and hands when you sleep so you may notice it worse when you first wake up, but that it gets better once you've been up for awhile.  I have had kidney disease for 7 years so I've dealt with a lot of swelling over the years.  I would say that if your blood pressures are staying in your normal range that you should try not to worry about it.  Worrying about it always makes my blood pressure go back up.

  • it's pregnancy induced carpal tunnel from the swelling.

The swelling in your body puts pressure on the carpal tunnels in your hands causing them to go numb, it does happen mostly worse at night and I'm not sure why.

I had it with ds very badly. I couldn't sleep, or hold on to things. It was pure hell.

I was afraid I wouldn't be able to hold my new baby.  However it went away after I delivered.

Oh I had severe pre-e and was on bedrest as well, and it can get worse even on bedrest.

  • Unless your appointment is today or tomorrow, call your doctor. This can be a sign of progressing to pre-e.  It might be normal swelling.  Either way, talking about it with your doctor will relieve the worry.
  • As my doctor says, "When in doubt, shout it out!" I would call your doctor and ask, that's what they are there for. I know I have been told if I get any symptoms like swelling, severe headache, blurry vision, naseau/vomitting, to go to the hospital ASAP. I've been lucky enough to not have any of those symptoms, just high BP. I'm on bed rest and on medication to control my blood pressure and thankfully with a higher dosage my BP is now under control, however, I am still on bed rest. As my doctor said, my BP can still spike at any time, there's still that chance. If I'm up moving around, I increase that chance. If I'm in bed resting there's nothing that we would be able to do about it, it was going to happen...I would call just to make sure, it never hurts to make a phone call and double check, especially if you're worried about it. You don't need any extra stress, hopefully it's nothing major!!
