Breast Pump Advice Needed

LO has had some trouble latching so we have been supplementing with formula but I'd really prefer not to use it at all. So we started with a hand pump (no good when you have carpel tunnel) and then I bought a low cost electric to try (is less effective than the hand pump) so now I'm looking into a more expensive/better electric. I'd like some advice on good pumps, why you'd pick that brand/'model, etc. It's a big expense for us considering we are both on FMLA right now and sadly neither of our companies offer paid leave but I consider this an investment in her health if we can exclusively feed breastmilk. Basically I want to make sure I'm getting a pump that will work before spending lots of money on it since the other ones we've tried produce less than if I just hand express my milk.

Also, is there a big difference between the hospital grade you can rent vs. say the $250 Medela you can purchase?

Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

Re: Breast Pump Advice Needed

  • I'd go with a Medela, Ameda, or Lansinoh. Look online for sales...ebay, etc. Don't buy a used one but you can get them for around $100-200 fairly easily.

If you are able I'd try to rent a hospital one just to really get things going since it sounds like you are off to a rough start...check with your LC on price though as sometimes is as expensive to rent for 2-3 months as it is to buy.

  • I used and recommend the Medela pump in style. It worked just as good as the hospital pump I used, never had an issue and I pumped for a year since i was back at work. BUT, not everyone responds well to the pump, I never had any issues but I have heard of some people having problems with let down and getting milk when pumping. I would say that depends on your body and how you respond as it is quite different than actual nursing and nothing can truly "empty" you than your child nursing. I'd just keep working on the latch and get a good pump, maybe the one you had just wasnt' great.
  • I am using the Medela PISA and it is working great for me.  They are pretty expensive but worth the investment.
