Anemic ladies come in

I just thought I would share my good news.  At my MW appt a little over a month ago my iron levels were down to a 9.6.  Since then I have been drinking my pregnancy tea (the nettles have iron), eating more iron-rich foods (organ meat, red meat, spinach, etc.), taking blackstrap molasses when I can stomach it, and taking a different PNV that contains ferrous fumurate (sp?).  Two weeks ago I learned that black tea inhibits iron absorption and I had been drinking it all day long.  I also cut that out.  Because of these changes my iron levels rose to a 10.9.  My MWs were really happy because they said this is the point in pregnancy were even non-anemic women see their levels drop, so I'm winning an uphill battle!!!

Just thought I would share what I have been doing and how it is helping.  My levels are still really low, but I am hoping they will continue to rise.  I'm trying to do all of this naturally without having to take more pills.

  • That is great news! Really good to hear. I just take an extra iron pill daily so hopefully my levels will be better as well.

    Thanks for sharing!

  • Yeah that is great news. I just learned a week ago that I'm anemic as well. But it hasn't come up yet, but I'm trying to increase my red meat and spinach etc intake. Plus an extra supliment.

    Good luck. And Good job.

  • That's great.  I take floradix, a liquid supplement that doesn't constipate.  Couldn't handle another pill anyhow....

My OB didn't give me any additional dietary advice...she told me to take an extra vitamin pill as well.

  • Good job!  My levels are 11.3, and my midwife said she's happy with an 11.  I've been trying to increase the iron in my diet, and I tried Floradix (blech).  Good for you on stomaching the molasses-I've heard it's nasty.
  • Thanks for posting this. It gives me hope that I'll be able to get my iron levels up. I've struggled with anemia in the past so I was expecting it during pregnancy and sure enough my iron levels were a 9 today. Guess I'll have to start eating spinach at every meal.
