So I'm 18 weeks with my first and just ordered my first "batch" of maternity pants from Ann Taylor Loft (received several gift cards for X-mas). I usually wear a size 2-4 in their normal clothes so I ordered a size 4 in their maternity pants and skirts. I received the clothes yesterday and they are huge on me! I have gained 5 lbs so far so a normal amount of weight. My question is whether I return for a smaller size or just make due with my Bella Band for the next 1.5-2 months until I might be able to wear the clothes. What's your advice? Thanks!
Re: Maternity Clothes Sizing Help!
Depends on your budget really. If you can't afford to go buy some stuff that will fit you right now (go to Old Navy, they have some decent maternity clothes that are cheap) then I would return them and exchange for the smaller size.
General rule of thumb is to get the size you are now, but that's highly variable on the brand of clothing.
I'm measuring about 30 weeks because of twins. I have a pair or cords like this that I ordered my pre-preg size and I swim in them. I can't wear them at all. I didn't return them because everyone keeps saying that they will fit later, but they go below my belly and I can't imagine my hips growing that much!
I'd return and get something that fits now.
Shirts on the other hand are a different story. The shirts that I loved at 18-20 weeks are now a little too short and I really need to go a couple sizes up. So I'd keep those.
You mentioned you are 18w. Here's something to consider about your near-term future....
I got a pair of pants from a girlfriend at ~22w with a full fist of extra room in the waist. I thought they would fit for a month or two, but maybe not the rest of my pregnancy.
A WEEK later, I couldn't even move the zipper. It was unreal how quickly things changed. That one pair of pants did a lot to change my expectations about my body's shape. No doubt about it, we are changing and growing! It's wonderful.
My suggestion for future purchases, check out fancy/nice yoga pants or anything with an elastic waistband.
