Trying to Get Pregnant

Prenatal Vitamin Question

Hello! I'm new to the boards, my husband and I just decided to start trying in the next couple of months. I am wondering, who do I go to to get prenatal vitamins? Should I see my OB, my normal doctor, or can I get some over the counter?

Also, any suggestions on types/brands of prenatal vitamins would be appreciated! Thank you!!

Re: Prenatal Vitamin Question

  • You can get prenatals over the counter but I use Adult One a Day gummies.  Prenatals make me sick and the gummies worked just fine throughout my first pregnancy.

  • I think you're going to find most women on here take over-the-counter prenatals -- even recommended by some of our dr's! I take the Target brand (Up & Up), which comes with a vitamin and DHA supplement. I do take them with food, or else they make my stomach upset.

  • You don't need a prescription for prenatals.  I use, I think it's called, Pro Lifetime Prenatals...  The brandname is definitely Lifetime.

    Good luck!

  • You can take OTC prenatals and be just fine.  With DD, I took a prenatal that was prescribed by my OB - it's called Citranatal.  I have some left over and have been taking it for this round of TTC as well.  It's two pills - one is the DHA supplement and the other is the vitamin (it has 1000 mg of folic acid).  I take it at night so it doesn't make me nauseous.  I don't recommend it if you have a hard time taking pills, though - the pills are gigantic.

  • Most people on the board take over the counter vitamins and it is fine for them.  I have an RX from my OBGYN for PNVs so that my specific nutritional needs are met.

  • I use the Target brand, per the recommendation of my OBGYN.

  • I checked with my doctor before TTC and she said that any prenatals are fine as long as they have 800mcg of folic acid (help prevent neural tube defects).  Once I actually get pregnant we will re-evaluate and she will possibly write a prescription at that point.  I take Target brand PNV and the Target Brant DHA supplement (a separate pill).  I take them after eating breakfast and have never had any problem with them.
  • My doc gave me a prescription before starting to TTC, because I have really bad nausea with all OTC vitamins.  The prenatal I take doesn't have DHA though, so I pick that up at GNC, it's super cheap there!

I have always taken my vitamin right before bed to help deal with stomach aches, I take the DHA with breakfast because I read that it (too) can inhibit folic acid absorbtion.

  • My doc gave me a RX for my PNV.  They are called Zatean-Pn Plus.  I've been happy with them so far, and haven't felt nauseus from them at all.  It seems just fine to get them OTC as well as long as they have the appropriate amount of vitamins/minerals.
