Allergic to Transmission Gels?

Everytime I go for an NST or an U/S my belly ends up irritated, red, and extremely itchy the rest of the day.  I am beginning to think I have some kind of allergy to the gels they use.  The dr. gave me an rx for a high content hydrocortisone cream but it doesn't seem to be helping.  Is anyone else experiencing this?  Have you found anything that helps?  I'm desperate.  I have scratched so much I have drawn blood.

Re: Allergic to Transmission Gels?

  • I vaguely remember discussing this in PT school when we learned therapeutic u/s and I know there's various brands of gel but not really sure what they are made of/if they all use the same thing. But like I said i remember our instructor bringing it up as something to be aware of.

Thanks.  I will ask next week if they have another brand on hand that may be less irritating.

  • Does your doctor's office use Aquasonic? Could you possibly be allergic to the dye used to color the gel? Maybe ask if they can use KY instead (I can't find anywhere that KY adds any type of coloring dye). Hope this helps!

Aquasonic does sound familliar.  I spoke to my dr this morning and she said they will try the tube instead of the bottle next time.  She also recommended putting a layer of hydrocortisone and/or vaseline on before I go to the appointment so it will help create a barrier in between my skin and the gel.  My belly is so cut up from the scratching I'm going to need to find adult size no scratch mittens!
