3rd Trimester

How far are you comfortable with DH/SO traveling

DH wants to travel 5 hours away for a sports event, and possibly stay the night.  At the time I will be 5 1/2 weeks away from my due date.  I told him I wouldn't be comfortable with him staying the night.  We have no close friends or family in the area if anything were to happen.  I don't think I am that comfortable with him being that far away from me.  I am wondering at 34 1/2 weeks pregnant how far would you be comfortable with your DH or SO traveling.

  • Honestly - very. I'm mentally preparing to do this on my own anyway. DH does not do well in hospital's or with certain smells. He had to get his blood drawn for our routine yearly insurance physicals and either the smell of the isopropyl alcohol or iodine made the 280 lb Polock faint and hit the floor XD The nurses all flipped out I was rolling on the floor X)

That's just me though... I don't like to count on anyone.

  • At 34 weeks? Anywhere. It's pretty unlikely you'll deliver that early, and if it's your first child, chances are he could get back in plenty of time.  My DH went camping when I was 37 weeks last time. It ended up being fine (I was 2 weeks late) but he could have missed that birth...
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
  • At 34 1/2 I would be comfortable with him going anywhere unless there were complications or some other medical reason as to why he should stay close.

DH was going to make plans to leave town to go hunting when I would be 39 weeks, I definitely put a stop on that one though. Being that far along, I am not comfortable with it. I don't think he realized how far along I would be though because I had to remind him.

  • I think you will be fine at 34 weeks with him only 5 hours away.

You can call him still right?

DH went on an over night camping trip with no phone reception at 36 weeks. I was a little nervous. But really, what are the chances? Next to nothing.

5 hours should be more than enough time for him to get to you should you go into labor.

If you can't drive for some reason and you REALLY don't know ANYONE you can always call an ambulance.

  • My DH is going on a business trip that's about 4-5 hours away by plane when I am 32-33 weeks. I'm not overly excited about it, but I know I'm extremely unlikely to go into labor that early. We also have plenty of close friends who will help if need be while he is gone, so that makes me feel better. I think I would be a lot more uneasy if that wasn't the case (and if it was a few weeks later).

  • My Dh travels for work every week and is gone 2-4 nights depending on the week.  When I was pg with dd he traveled (4 hours by car) up until I was 39 weeks pg.  He got home on Wednesday night and dd was born Sunday morning so it was perfect timing.  This time around he's 4+ hours away every week by plane and he's planning on traveling until I'm 38 weeks.  I'm having a scheduled c/s but could go into labor any time before.  I'll be 34 weeks pg on Friday and DH is getting on a plane Monday morning to fly to the east coast for 3 nights and I'm not at all worried but since he's always traveling it doesn't bother me.

Unlike your situation I do have family and friends close by to help with dd and get me to the hospital if necessary so that helps ease any anxiety.

  • My DH travels for work so it's always been, and still is, a possibility that he won't be here when I go into labor but unlike you, I have a strong support network in place. If I were in your shoes I would be a little nervous. The odds are that you will be fine while he's gone but I understand that you would be afraid to be alone, this is a scary and uncertain time!
  • At 34 weeks I wouldn't have a problem with that. However, his friend was DESPERATELY trying to get him to go to SOUTH AFRICA for TEN DAYS when I am 37w. Ummm both DH and I shut down that idea!

  • Thanks ladies, it is good to have some different perspectives.  I am leaving it up to him, and he is heavily leaning toward going.  My husband just can't resist sports.

  • My DH will be traveling to Asia for about 5 days, returning right around 35.5 weeks and we agreed that's the last business trip he'll be taking for a while.  He asked me the other day when he should plan to start traveling again (he's usually gone probably 5 days every 6 weeks or so) and that I couldn't answer -- just need to wait and see how we're doing, I guess.
  • Although I'm not completely comfortable with my husband going really far away we have no choice. My husband will be leaving when I'm 34 weeks for 6 to 8 weeks for work. He will be between 5 and 8 hours away. I'm mentally preparing myself for the fact that he most likely won't be there when I go into labour. He may make it home before the baby is born. I would like to tell him to stay home but he needs to keep this job and we need the money. I live in a town without many close friends and without any family. If I go into labour and can't get ahold of my husband I will call my mom she will only be 4 hours away.

I live in a military town and many women here give birth while their husbands are in another country. Some of them won't meet their children until they are months old. I keep reminding myself of this to keep some perspective.
