Baby Food Maker ?

I know I've got a long time before I'm going to need this, but I just saw a commercial for the Magic Bullet and it make be think.  Have any of you or do any of you plan on making at least some of your own baby food?  I've heard of people doing it and BRU sells food processors to do so.  What are you using to make baby food if you do?  Would something like the Magic Bullet work?  Its only $35 or so on Amazon so I was thinking about getting it now so I can use it and then just having it for the baby when I need it.

Re: Baby Food Maker ?

  • We just used a mini-food processor....not a 'baby' one, just a cheapo from bed, bath, and beyond. Anything that grinds would work  =)

  • I just picked up one of the two-cup B&D blenders - you really don't need anything bigger- I mostly use it for grinding stuff up when I'm baking...I made baby food with my first, and we skipped pureed stuff completely with #2. Maybe I'll bust it out again for #3!

  • We just used our blender and our mini food processor.  Both work just fine.

  • We got a food mill for our wedding, so we were planning on putting that to use. But DH and I saw the "Baby Brezza" on BRU the other day, and it looked pretty cool. Probably a huge waste of money, but it looked cool. =]
  • I second the food processor, then you can still use it once you are past the baby-food stage.
  • I'm definitely hoping to make some of my own baby food.  Tyler Florence is supposedly coming out with a baby-food cookbook in May that I want to get!

  • Alright, sounds like a food processor it is.  I figured that's all I would need, but of course they threw those expensive fancy looking things in my face at BRU to confuse me. Smile

  • We made our own purees with Drew. But we were in and out of purees so quickly, I feel like I barely made baby food at all!  We started at 6 months and by 8 months Drew was really into finger food.

My MIL bought the Babea Cook (sp?) baby food maker for us.  It was handy, I guess.  Just steaming things and putting them in our little 4 cup food processor would have worked as well.  I wouldn't have spent the money on it myself nor would I recommend it to anyone.  Nothing wrong with it, just not necessary, you know?  Especially since, like I said, we were only in purees for about two months.

  • I plan to dehydrate fruits and veggies and then powder them!  I will reconstitute them with breast milk.  With steaming you lose nutrients to the water, so this will be a great solution for me!  I already have a super 9-tray Excalibur dehydrator though.
  • I used to be a nanny and I have used the William and Sonoma baby food maker and it is great, it steams and processes the food all in one. I have also made my own baby food, using my Vita-mix to puree the food. You dont need anything fancy that cost extra money, just use what you have on hand, a blender and a steamer for the stove. Never microwave baby's food, you destroy lots of good nutrients.
  • Ditto on the food processor. It is a handy kitchen tool to have as well if you don't have one, so it's something you'll get longer use out of. I also just froze the purees in ice cube trays so I could make big batches at once and have some for later, and that system worked out great. I must admit I'm tempted to track down a cheap, used Beaba babycooker this 2nd time around since it sounds like it could make things even easier, but really, it's such a short time they eat purees that I couldn't justify buying one new.

  • We used a steamer and our blender. I wanted a Babycook in the worst way but now I see that they are kind of a waste.

This time we plan on doing babyled weaning so HOPEFULLY this won't come up.

  • We also just used our food processor.  Once the purees were done, I froze them in ice cube trays.  After they set then tossed them all in freezer bags.  In the beginning, one cube is a perfect serving size, then you can add more as needed.
  • I made most of my son's food and I used my cuisinart food processor.  It was great.  I liked being able to make large batches and freeze them in ice cube trays.  That way I could spend one night every couple weeks making food and it didn't feel like such a chore.
