3rd Trimester

is this common? because it sure doesnt seem that way!

i see all these ladies on here that are on bedrest because of preterm labor.. well.. iv been having contractions for WEEKS now. some days they will be here-and-there but some days i have them 5-10 minutes apart ALL day!

i was also already dialating (and had a SUPER soft cervix as the nurse said) when i went in to L&D at 29 weeks!

my dr has been giving me routine FFN's and so far they are all negative. he also seems to live by this test because as long as its negative he seems to think there is nothing to worry about?

he told me to take ibuprofen every 4 hours to help stop the contractions when they get bad but dont take it more than 3 days in a row? i did it for 2 days and was still having contractions the WHOLE time!!

and all he said was to drink LOTS of water (which i do) and "take it easy"?

should i be concerned that he isnt more concerned?

  • If your tests are negative then I'd say don't sweat it. But you're also still experiencing contractions no matter what medical interventions they are telling you to do.

When do you go back to see your OB?

  • that seems a little odd but I'm assuming you haven't progressed at all from the original dilation/softness??

My bigger concern would be taking ibuprofin. My dr. explained at length to me why we aren't supposed to take it and it has to do with the baby not being able to transition to breathing air at birth.

Is there another dr. in your practice that you can speak to about your concerns??

He's not willing to up your visits to every week to monitor this? I'd ask to come in every week from now on. What you're talking about sure sounds to me like your body is gearing up for labor. If it's starting this early your LO could come earlier than your OB would like.

Wow this! I was told only tylenol products and I'm hesitant to take those. Maybe you could switch to tylenol and see if that helps. You're already drinking tons of water and that's supposed to slow down if not stop contractions.

I agree with this - just be annoying. Doctors are jackasses. I'm a little wierded out by the ibuprofen thing too. I thought we were only supposed to take tylenol? I can see telling you to take ipuprofen a few times if you really needed it, but saying take it every day? Doesn't make sense to me.

  • i dont know if iv progressed any because my dr doesnt check. i was checked by a nurse in L&D. my dr says it can make matter worse by checking me so he is avoiding it.

and yes i was also under the impression to stay away from ibuprofen and like you all im also hesitant when even taking tylenol but im just doing what my dr said?

he said if i "get any worse" or "need to be seen" then to come in before my two weeks but i dont know what that really means considering i thought that contractions this early and this regular were bad enough?

i drink about 6-8 (16oz) glasses of water a day. id say im drinking plenty (not to mention the nurse in L&D told me i had PERFECT urine from all the water i drink!) and if im not at work then im laying in bed, on the couch or taking a bath trying to ease my contractions!!

  • hi just popping in - i had PTL starting at 28 weeks and didnt become a real problem until 32 weeks. If your not dilating from the contractions theres nothing to worry about. Yes its a pain in the butt to be contracting all day but unfortunately thats just part of the process.I was put on a terbutaline pump eventually from all of my PTL and making me dilate. If your contractions become painful then call the doctor again. There isnt much he can do and believe me you DONT want to be put on a terbulatine pump to stop the contrax....take it easy, drink water and just be aware of your body. its much better to take it easy at home than it is to be locked up in a hospital on magnesium drip for days and days. never question whether to call the doctor - better safe than sorry.

also - i am not sure about that whole Ibuprofin....how odd......maybe a second opinion is in order?

     Good luck!!

  • Okay - this may sound silly, but, take a deep breath, hold it in and let it out slow....take it easy.  Certainly, take all your concerns to your doctor and nail him with questions if you aren't getting the answers you need to hear.  However...

With all three of my pregnancies I started having regular contractions throughout the day - mostly none painful - around 28-29 weeks along.  With my first, my OB watched me like a hawk since I didn't have a history to base anything off of.  My cervix and such was fine with him and I made it to 38 weeks along.  No bedrest or anything.

With my daughter - who's now 15 months old - I was considered high risk and saw my OB and a High Risk Specialist - during this time I started to go through the same thing - contractions starting in week 28 and on.  My high risk specialist saw that my cervix was also starting to thin down.  So, they monitored it, told me to take it easy (stay off my feet as much as possible without official bedrest), drink lots of fluids and IF I was having the contractions of 5/6 or more per hour to take 3 Ibprofen every 6 hours.

I asked her about that last piece due to what you've all mentioned on what you hear about taking meds while prego.  Well, she gave me a VERY detailed explaination about it.  Basically, it's just as "safe" to take Ibprofen as Tylenol during pregnancy in the second trimester up until the 36th week....she stressed that after week 36 to STOP taking it - mark my calendar and keep it in the forefront of my mind.

There is something in Ibprofen that will potentially injure a baby if taken after week 36 - I don't remember all the details she gave me, however, both her and my regular OB confirmed this information.  Because a good portion of woman don't remember all details, they just tell the general population not to take Ibprofen at all to be on the safe side, but, if you are having issues and if they tell you its okay you can take it.

I took it on and off for about 2-3 weeks when I had 6 or more contractions during any hour.  It helped and there is nothing wrong with my daughter.  I went to week 38 with her as well.

Well, here I am once again with my third pregnancy experiencing a lot of contractions - started in week 28 - talked with my OB about it (saw a high risk specialist once again) and she told me this time that of course monitor it, if they became painful and/or happen every 5 minutes for more than an hour to come in to get checked, but, because I have a history with 2 other pregnancies and going full term regardless she was not overly concerned about it. She's checked my cervix a time or two and it was all right.

Here I am in week 35 still going through it, but, still prego as well!
