Infertility

Anyone have to take a class on how to give injections?

Is that standard protocol for the RE office?  The nurse mentioned it last time I was in there about getting me set up for it if that Femara cycle didn't work or the one I'll probably be starting this week.

I'm just curious if others have gone to one and what it was like.

  • We didn't.

  • We did.  I think it's pretty standard.  We did ours the same day we got our meds list.

  • DH and I went to a class to show us how to do our injections before we started IVF.  They showed us a video, and then we had a bunch of syringes and expired meds to practice putting together/mixing/drawing up with.  We got to take a video home as well, in case we forgot anything.

  • yes, we had about an hour and a half class that went over our clinic's "rules" for IVF (no drinking while on stims, etc), a video tour of the lab and a video of how IVF is done. that was about 45 mins, then the remaining 45 mins was shots demos/instructions.

    good luck!

  • No class at either of my RE offices.

I was given a dvd when I started using gonal-f for my 5th IUI and then the RN has personally shown me a few other things, today actually, for my IVF meds.

  • I had to take a class on injections, but it was for my hubby (he gets 3 shots a week of HCG for his low testosterone.) It was pretty easy...they just show you how to mix and give all the injections.

  • We did.  It was 4 hours and went over everything that happens during a cycle.  It was a lot of repeat info for me, but if someone didn't know a lot it would be really helpful.

They did go over how they adjust doses to control follicles etc so that was interesting.  We also did paperwork during the class.

  • We had to take one at my RE's office. There was only about 3 couples in the class and it was about an hour long. They had us do practice shots and showed us about all the medication. They also gave handouts and a website link to see the injections being given incase we had any questions.

  • We did, twice.

We went when we started injections for IUI and then we had a mandatory injection meeting for IVF.

  • It is suggested for our IVF, but it is not mandatory.  We didn't have to do an injections class when I was just on Follistim and the Ovidril for our IUI's.  They instructions are straight forward, so I'm not sure if they show anything else in the class.

  • We were given a list of all of the injections we would need to do and links to videos of each online. We were asked to watch all of the videos, then when we came in for our injection "class" with the nurse she basically just asked if we had watched them and had any questions. We had already done trigger shots with our IUIs, so I think once you've done one they all seem pretty easy.

  • We sat with our nurse to go over our meds and she showed us how to fill the syringes and how/where to inject.  It took maybe 45 minutes.  It was refreshing for me just so that I was able to double check everything.

  • Yep, we just had it last week.  It was about an hour w/ our nurse. She went over all the shots & how to mix the different medicines & the terms she would use when she would call us & tell us how much of them we needed for the next day.  We even had to do a demo each time.  It was totally overwhelming but really informative & exciting.  Good Luck!  :)
  • we didn't take any.
