Learning to crawl is apparently very frusturating...

Maggie is showing a burning desire to want to freely travel wherever she pleases.  Especially to reach all of those new, exciting Christmas toys.  However, when she tries to go forward toward something, she ends up pushing herself backwards away from it.  This is all well and good at the beginning of the day, but half way through the day she is erupting into crying fits of frustration (and I kind of can't blame her).  Any idea of how to 'teach' her to go forward?

  • She'll figure it out eventually. James went backwards for a while too. He'd always back himself into a strange position (e.g. between the ottoman and the couch) and wouldn't be able to get out. It was kind of sad and kind of funny. We tried to get him to go forwards by tempting with toys in front of him, but I don't think it helped. It just made him frustrated. He figured it out on his own eventually.

  • Maybe the 3-6 or 6-9 month board would know?  I'm searching for answers too since DS1 is doing the same thing.  It's pretty cute to see this little tiny thing up on all fours rocking back and forth.  I'm not ready for him to be mobile though.  He's going to be trouble!

  • Thanks for the suggestion, I posted it on 6-9 mo so we'll see what they have to say also.

I agree with you though, I don't know if I'm at all ready for one or both of them to be cruising around here - but I just hate seeing her so frustrated.

That is a VERY cute picture!!!!!

  • We're dealing with the same thing!  I know it's good to have them on their bellies, but I hate seeing them (and hearing them!) so frustrated!  Keira has such a little temper and screams that they can't get to things!  Even though I don't see them going anywhere anytime soon, I didn't think we'd be dealing with this already!

  • Same thing here....I think it's just another phase we have to get through.

My mom was saying that she remembers all her babies getting frustrated when they were in between those big milestones (rolling, crawling, standing, walking, talking)...it's like they know what they're supposed to be doing, but their bodies haven't caught up yet.

I'm dreading the day they start crawling.....I'm not ready to baby proof my house yet!  Also, we live in an old home (150 plus years old) and so my living room has those wide pumpkin pine floors...but there's large gaps between the boards.  We planned on refinishing them before the girls started crawling, but like everything else in life....it came sooner thatn we thought!  I mean...we knew they would be crawling any time now- but how did it go by so quickly?
