I don't know how many crafty ladies we have on here, but it seems like a lot of people are making various nursery pieces and such. I love crafty things but am a bit rusty as I just finished a master's degree and haven't had much free time the past few years. I used to quilt but haven't in 7-8 years. I'd really like to make a baby quilt but am looking for something simple. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm thinking about making a strip quilt, even though I've never made one (I've always done block patterns before). Any thoughts or pattern suggestions?

Re: Baby quilt
when i was pregnant with dd, i made a baby quilt in the jewel box pattern:

unfortunately, it's so beautiful that i haven't dared use it yet! for several friends, i've made simple log-cabin type baby quilts, and they usually get a lot of use.
I once went to a shower and each guest designed a big square for the baby quilt. I remember there were special crayons for drawing on fabric or something. The instructions were to show something that will be important in the baby's life. There were all kinds at the end of the shower - sports, family, food... My mom and I drew people laughing. It was adorable and the mommy's sister sewed it up after the shower for the nursery.
This is a t-shirt quilt, but the pattern ended up looking something like this (but a lot smaller):

I found a super easy pattern since I have to make 2. I bought the fabric yesterday and I already have the strips cut out. Here is the link to the pattern. And I am not using their "crib pattern", I just readjusted the original scale myself for a crib.

Go to your local library and see if they have any good pattern books. Then you can just copy the pages you need. Also Joann's sometimes has cute quilt sets they sell. I think they are usually smaller though so I don't know if they would work for you or not.
If you have a machine that can applique, you can make something look really fancy when its not. I'm making a quilt that is similar to the one in this bedding set. https://www.amazon.com/SoHo-Noah-Ark-Reversible-Designs/dp/B0012IVT4K/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1293629455&sr=8-1 My machine has a "hand applique" stitch and it makes it look like I spent forever making something I took no time on.
I have made a t-shirt quilt for my husband and it turned out awesome, but it was difficult becuase the t-shirts tend to roll up on the sides and you dont end up with even rows.
I have found the yellow brick pattern to be very easy and simple.
