Separation anxiety?

In the past week Evan has started following me when I leave the room and crawls up to me and pulls up to be held. When DH is holding him and I come near he reaches out for me. This morning when I dropped him off at daycare he cried when I handed him to his teacher and that never happens.

Is this the beginning of separation anxiety?

  • I just Googled this and read that it can last until age 2. Really?

  • Yes and yes.  :-)

With DS it varied.  Some days he would cling to us, and some days he would be running into daycare not looking back.  Right now, he is stuck on DH like glue as soon as he gets home.  "daddy, daddy, daddy, daddy...."  I kind of get sad that he doesn't want mommy - but I figure I would be annoyed if he was stuck on me, so that's how I console myself.  :-)

  • You are lucky that it is just now starting, tough to get used to I'm sure.  DD started with it at 4 months or so, and it is miserable.  If someone wants to hold her I hand her off and literally have to duck so she doesn't see me and start crying.  The days when my parents watch her I have to have Dh take her in because having her see me just gets her all worked up.  Hopefully it will pass soon for you guys, I don't anticipate it getting much better for us.

Wow, I am so sorry. I bet it is really hard to watch since there isn't much to be done about it. I hope it passes for you guys soon.

I thought we might skip it since he seemed fine and had already turned 9 months. I thought this might be the one area he would be easy going since he has been going to daycare 5 days a week for 6 months and would be used to it. I guess I just need to make my exit faster at daycare instead of chatting with his teacher.

  • This phase sucks.  Some days it is worse than others.  Some days if DH or I walk into a room, he wants us.  If we both leave a room he freaks out.  Other days, he couldn't care less and will go to whoever walks by - even if I'm holding him.

Other times DS will stand at my legs in the kitchen and hang on them until I pick him up.  Even if DH tries to pick him up...it's pointless.

With Micaela... I want to say we were pushing 4 before it stopped completely.  It wasn't every day, but she would still have phases of crying when I dropped her off at daycare and phases of running to the door and slamming it in my face because she was so happy to be there. lol
