3rd Trimester

Measuring Ahead Question

I'm a first time mom, so this may be really obvious (sorry)! I had my 34 week apt. yesterday, and my doctor told me that I am measuring 2 weeks ahead.  After I left I started wondering, does that mean that our baby will likely come early, or just that he's going to be a big baby?

Thanks so much!

Re: Measuring Ahead Question

  • at 34 weeks measuring ahead by 2 weeks could mean nothing at all. I have gestational diabetes and at 34 weeks my baby was measuring over a month ahead so they were concerned but im almost 38 weeks and getting induced tomorrow (because of the diabetes and hypertension) and they are estimating her to be almost 9 lbs but that doesnt mean she actually will be that big either. As for coming early, size of baby really doesnt indicate delivery date at all. hth

  • You could just have extra fluid in your uterus...which is a good thing!

  • Could mean a bigger baby, could just be position or fluid. It means little about when your baby will arrive.

  • personally I hate "measuring ahead/measuring behind". Its all relative. DS was 6.5lbs when he was born. I am a small person so to me that is a normal size baby. Now a person that is 6ft tall that is probably a small baby and normal to them would be a 8-9lb baby (large to me). If babies tend to be larger in your family or your H's family then you run the chance of having a larger baby and they are going to tell you that you are measuring ahead. Vice Versa with a smaller baby. They will still come at their regular EDD. Unless there are medical factors in play.

  • It means nothing. Both FH and u/s measurements have a margin of error in dating and the older the fetus the more normal variation in size.  At one point, my FH put me 2 weeks ahead but u/s just a few days later put me at 5 days behind.
  • I am measuring a week ahead and asked my OB the same question. She said that as long as you are having a normal pregnancy (no GD or other complications or questions about EDD being off) that it doesn't mean anything. The way they measure you externally can vary and it doesn't mean your baby will come early or that they will be huge.

  • It means nothing. Those measurements can be off...anything 2 weeks ahead or 2 weeks behind is the normal range. It can be for a lot of reasons, such as the baby's position at the time. It can change by your next appt. I always measured behind with DS, as in 4 weeks, and he was average size. With this LO, at my 24w appt I was measuring 22w, and then at my 28w appt, she caught up to exactly 28w.

  • a couple appointments ago, I was measuring slightly ahead, but my Dr. said it could just be the way the baby is positioned. As for you and your SO's weight determining your baby's weight, my Dr. said that isn't a deciding factor. I was a big baby, over 9lbs, and DH was a small baby, only 6lbs., however this doesn't determine our baby's weight. :)
