2nd Trimester

Those who banked cord blood for #1

Are you planning on doing it for #2? We banked with viacord for DS. I know the success of a sibling match is the highest, but I am not sure it worth the $ to do it again. Since 2008 when we banked DS- it has been linked in curing 60+ diseases. I feel that I would always feel guilty doing it for one and not the other. Things are just so much tighter financially this time around. I called viacord who of course told me that each child should have their own for the possibility of curing tissue cancers etc. They offer a $480 discount for sibling.  What do you all think?

  • I may be way out here because I am in Alberta and I know it's different between the States and Canada but a girlfriend of mine said she was fortunate enough that her husband's insurance plan through work covered all costs of it. I am not sure how your health care and insurance works there but if you and your DH have insurance plans perhaps call them and find out if there is any coverage on it or if there is an upgraded plan you can switch to within that insurance company that would cover it, that way it may be a smaller cost to just upgrade plans rather than the cost of the CBB.

  • They're making so many advancements in artificial stem cell development that I would rather save my money now and buy/bribe/blackmail the best of the best in medical care should it be needed.

I know it's hard. It's hard to not do for the second one no matter what the situation is- mom's are constantly saying they feel bad because they're not doing a pregnancy journal this time around, not taking belly pictures, not spending time with headphones blaring classical music to the uterus. The reality is there's a lot of things that just can't be done the second time around and it's ok. If banking just isn't in the cards this time around you can't feel bad. Know that you have it there for either of them to use and that's steps ahead of what other children have access to.

  • We are on #1, but will be doing the public option.  Aside from the cost, for us it makes more sense. I read an article about private/public banking and one of the major reasons we will be choosing the public option is that if a child is born with a particular disease, his/her stem cells will also contain that disease.  While that argument stands for some and not for others, it works for me.

  • We are still trying to decide ourselves, but I wanted to put out there that local banks can be far less expensive.  We went with one in our town that is stored at a public bank (run by the med school) but is ours.  It was $800 upfront and $100/yr after that.  They were at the hospital to pick it up personally within an hour of her birth and have been great.

  • I did not bank either DD #1 or DD # 2s cord blood. With DD #2 I actually did not cut the cord until it stopped pulsating which is what I will be doing with this LO as well. Just another option to consider.
  • I am not banking and didn't with DD either. Just not financially able nor really see the need. I also work as a nurse on a pediatric cancer unit that does bone marrow transplants and kids who need one typically will use a matched siblings bone marrow not their own cord blood or their sib's cb. I would like to donate my babies' cord blood so it could be used in an untwisted cord blood transplant somewhere but my hospital doesn't do donations yet.
