Bloody nipple

ow ow ow ow!  I have no idea how it happened, but I have a bloody, crusty nipple.  I've been applying lanolin, and letting bm dry on it.  Should I let DD eat from the boob, or should I pump?

Re: Bloody nipple

  • She can still nurse from the affected side but you may see blood in her diaper from it. I say do it if you aren't in terrible pain. If you're in pain I'd pump instead.

  • Ouch! I found nursing to be less painful when that happened to me with DS1. Fwiw, it healed quickly.

  • I hope it heals quickly! Ask Ksun about milk blisters. She might have some advice for you.

Was it a bleb?  Or is it bloody/crusty out of nowhere?

  • I don't think it's a blister (no blob).  Just bloody/crusty out of nowhere.
  • Ouch! I hope it heals fast.
  • Ouch! I would still nurse as long as it isn't too painful.

  • It suggests something has changed with her latch, Pixy.  Have you recently started positioning her differently perhaps?  Put lanolin on it, definitely nurse through it (unless you're in a lot of pain, but it doesn't sound like it), and be hyper-vigilant about the latch.

She could also be going through a growth spurt (has she been clusterfeeding in the evenings?) and toughening your nips up for further nursing.
