Abnormal ultrasound :(

I just got back from my anatomy scan and I was referred to a specialist for a couple things that were concerning. First thing, the tech said the calves were enlarged. She asked if big calves run in the family and indeed, they do. But she also said she hadn't seen anything like this, it's not consistent with edema. It looks like soft tissue, muscle to her, it's just enlarged. Secondly she said there is a bright spot in the bowels. She said it could just be some poop or blood in the bowels that the baby is holding there since they aren't supposed to go in the womb.

She said neither one of these necessarily mean anything, it could just be normal variances or, in the case of the calves, hereditary but I have to go to a specialist to check everything out. I'm so worried! Does anyone have any experience with either of these things?

  • I don't have experience with the abnormalities that you mentioned, but I do have experience w/ and abnormal u/s so I know what you're going through - the wait is difficult and a rollercoaster ride. Stay positive, don't stress - I really hope everything is just fine!!

  • T&P headed your way- I went to a specialist for my u/s and they were super fast and very precise.  Since the doctor reviews the tech's scans immediately/while they're doing them it's nice knowing when we left there if there were any problems or not.

Keep us posted.  I hope your baby is just planning on being an athlete!

  • It's hard - but try not to worry. Did you have the 1st tri NT or 2nd tri blood work? If you did and they were normal you probably have much less to worry about. Like you said, large calves run in your family and as far as echogenic focus marks - when they are isolated they can go away by the next scan, from what I've read it's when they see them in multiple spots (heart, bowel, and kidney) that they worry more about them being markers for something. Even when the scan is completely nromal it doesn't mean everything is OK - it's all a waiting game until delivery. We have a fetal echo next week - the waiting is the worst part. T&Ps to you, it's more likely than not that LO is just fine.

  • I have had 2 abnormal ultrasounds so far and I know that waiting is the hardest part!  It is hard to keep your mind from filling up with all the "what ifs".  Take care of yourself today and do something nice for you!  Tomorrow will be here before you know it!

Good luck and keep us posted!

  • Well I don't know what to say about the big calf muscles (except maybe baby just has big calf muscles).  But I do know that my best friend had a similar issue with a bright spot on baby's bowels seen on ultrasound and it turned out to be nothing.  It went away on it's own.  And baby girl is now a healthy and beautiful 8 week old!

Hopefully it's nothing and they're just being cautious.  But I know how it starts to make you freak out!   Hang in there!

  • I also just found out we had an abnormal ultrasound.  Bright spot on the heart and enlarged renal pelvis.  We have a level 3 scan next week and I'm scared to death.  The waiting sucks.  Good luck to you and baby!!
