Amniotic fluid or urine?

Hi ladies Im trying to figure his out and save a trip to L&D if its only urine but..Im on my 3rd trimester and starting to have minimal vaginal discharge (sorry TMI) again which is normal, I believe BUT I also noticed something  a little different. If I'm on my feet, or bend down or strain my belly in any way I feel my underwear getting wet, not soaked and not A LOT but enough that I feel it and my panties get wet all the time now and when I sit on the toilet its like someone poured a little water on my underwear. How do I know if its urine or amniotic fluid? It doesn't have any odor but at times it smells like bleach or chlorine. My last doctor app last week, cervix was fine and they told me my cervix was closed and long, but Ive been having this problem for weeks now to OB b/c it's just recently Ive been having the clear wet undies. Anyone else went/going through this?

Re: Amniotic fluid or urine?

  • Call your doctor.

I had too many scares during my pregnancy. When in doubt, call. Good luck!!!

  • Yup- I would call, you can't be too careful and things can change so quickly!
  • I would call just to be safe....  My water broke last Monday and it was definitely clear fluid. But unlike you, I felt an actual gush of water....   Better to be safe than sorry.
  • I've noticed the same thing lately.  I'm 24 weeks.  My underware are just really WET, not like a normal "discharge" and sometimes smells like amonia (which is waht urine will smell like after sitting for a while)  I wore a panty liner yesterday and could see some yellow on it so I figured it was urine. You hear about women "leaking urine" in subsequent pregnancies.  I don't FEEL it come out, like a gush or anything though.  I know I should call too.  They can do a swab test to confirm if it's amniotic fluid or urine.

Can they still do the test if it's not happening that day or do I need to wait for it to happen again?  It doesn't happen EVERY day but it's happened a few times lately.

  • Seriously?  Call immediately.  If your doctors decide that it's not amniotic fluid, then the relief you feel will be well worth the hassle of a trip to L&D.  If you are leaking, you need medical intervention.  If a sac is open, you're risking exposing your babies to infection and other problems.

  • Hey ladies, I'm at l&d now, been here since 6:30 this morning, they dis a strip test and that came put negative, just did an ffn and waiting for results and they're also gonna do an ultrasound just to double check that neither of the babies are low on fluids.

  • I would call your doctor.  They can do a test to make sure.  At around 34-37 weeks  I had the same thing. I thought it was urine too.  At my last ultrasound they noticed my amniotic fluid was low and sent me to the hospital to deliver.  You need to keep those babies in as long as you can.  I made it 37 weeks and 4 days.  7 lb boy and 6 lb. 15 oz. girl. Both healthy and perfect.  Good luck!
  • Good Luck! Crossing my fingers that its just a false alarm.

  • Ok so it seems like it was false alarm, thank god. According to the tech here at the hospital she said babies, fluids and cervix are fine but I'm still waiting for radiology results to say that everything IS indeed normal..I guess the bigger I get, the more they push down my bladder? I'd love to deliver them around 37 weeks! :)

  • Thanks for posting this question!  I was pretty sure it was urine too (in my case), I can literally FEEL them on my bladder when they move around, it's almost painful sometimes.  But this thread made me second guess it and I spent 4 hours in L&D this morning too.  They did a test and examined the slides, the doc. said cervix looks good and there was no fluid around it and the slides looked good.  He also did an u/s and said fluid levels around both babies looked good.  They really insisted that if it happened again that I still come in, because it's better to be safe then sorry.  One baby  kept hiding from the monitor so they put me BACK on the monitors again at the end to try and track her HB some more.  They had to keep going back and forth from the u/s machine to the little belts on my belly to find her heartbeat, she was in a weird position but they eventually got her long enough and said everything looked good and I could go home.

MAN the L&D beds are SO uncomfortable!  They had me lay flat on my back with my legs down because they were having such a hard time monitoring the one baby and by the time I left my lower back hurt SO BAD!  :(  But I'm glad I went and have confirmation that all is well.  And you too!

  • Chickandtaco, so happy you and I got off our butts and went just to double check and it turned out to be good news for the both of us..haha I really didnt wanna go but I couldnt relax or sleep thinking about "what if" and if it WAS amniotic fluids and put these babies in danger it would have been my fault! But you were lucky you were there for only 4 hrs, I was there for 6 hrs and it sucked soo bad! lol But it's over thank goodness. They said because my boys are big, have so much fluids around them (which is good) I will be getting irritability, contractions type of pain for the rest of the pregnancy and that the leaking is the pressure on my bladder. how fun that i have to go through this for 8 more weeks! :-o

  • Yeah, I knew it would take a while at L&D it always does.  My hubby ended up calling off work today so he could stay home with our son because I was gone so long.  But of course, better safe then sorry.  I'm only 24 weeks so it would have been really BAD if it was amniotic fluid.  Yay for leaking pee I guess! LOL  time to go buy some more pantyliners I guess!  Between pregnancy and post pregnancy I'll be in pads for the next 6 months!  Oh well!  Just grateful that my girls are doing good in there, that's all that matters.

  • That's funny, same here, my husband took off work so he can stay home with our daughter for that same reason. That and I was not gonna wake her up at 5:30am to get dressed and get out in the 30 degrees weather to go sit at a hospital! :-o

  • I'm glad you are both ok.  My underwear are constantly wet, although I also tend to sweat a lot down there, so I asked my Dr. at my last appointment.  It was so bad that the sonographer mentioned that I left a wet spot on the paper when I got up from my ultrasound.  All the tests came back negative (she tested the pH, visually examined my cervix while I coughed, and did a "fern test").  It's amazing how many things you have to worry about while pregnant!
