Braxton Hicks or real?

So today I saw the NP at my OB's office for the first time.  She seemed very competent and quite thorough - but maybe a little cautious.  Anyway, my baby is usually pretty active and it took her a few minutes (with me flat on my back) to get the FHR.  As we were finishing up, she said, "you're contracting, do you feel that?"  I told her that I occasionally felt some tightening over my abdomen, which has never been painful.  She asked how often (maybe a couple times a day), and was I hydrated (yes, I think so), tired (I worked all night last night, but slept this morning), etc.  She then decided she needed to check my cervix - which is long and closed (thank God).

All along I had been feeling this and thinking it was probably Braxton Hicks, but she said, "no, this is a real contraction."  So, of course now I am nervous whenever I think there is any firmness or tightening.  I have been trying to rest and hydrate today, but my work is often very demanding and I am wondering if I have anything to worry about with this...  Any thoughts?

Re: Braxton Hicks or real?

  • at 24 weeks I was having real contractions... I went to L&D because of back pain... turned out to be contractions every ten minutes. I guess contractions arent always felt in the stomach.. They did a fetal fibronectin test, and it was positive... but then they measured my cervix and it was long and closed. As long as your cervix is doing well, I wouldn't worry. The contractions can come and go... If youre really concerned, ask your OB. They'd really know the best answer.
