Trying to Get Pregnant

Opinions please (LONG)

I used to post here, but now I'm mostly a lurker coming out to get some opinions.

Background:  We are on cycle 10.  Started out charting, doing OPKs, etc, but quit charting after awhile because it became too much for me personally. We would just have EOD or ED sex from around cycle day 10ish to cycle day 20ish.  My average cycle length (I still use FF to keep track of my cycles), is 29 days.  I have spotting anywhere from 2-7 days before AF comes.  AF only lasts 4 days, which consists of the first day of major cramping plus medium to heavy flow and then the next three days are very light red flow to spotting again.

I talked to my doctor about all the spotting back in June and he said it's just my body adjusting to coming off of BCP.  I have requested that the doctor see me again to figure out what's going on with my body with me not having a 'normal period' (according to when I was on BC) and all of the spotting, but he won't do anything until 1 year of trying.

I go in for my yearly pap tomorrow, and was wanting any opinions you may all have.  I don't want to start testing, but I wasn't for sure if there was anything my doctor could start me on for my irregular periods/spotting. Or if any of you have experienced some of the same things, what did your doctor do and how far were you into trying?

Sorry it's so long, but I wanted to make sure I gave you all the information!

Re: Opinions please (LONG)

  • My thought would be that your doctor won't feel comfortable prescribing something without testing. It could be so many things, or it could be nothing. In order to help narrow down on what is really going on (if anything) testing of your hormones would need to be done. The endocrine and reproductive system are very complex so you can't just say, "here take a xxx and you are good to go."

If it were me, I'd bring it up again tomorrow. Sounds like when you first talked to your doc it was only 4 or 5 months into TTC. He/she may view 10 months differently and be ready to help you figure it out.

    Best of luck!

Can you clarify what you mean by this?

As for the rest of your post, I don't think what you describe with your spotting sounds terribly abnormal or worrisome to me (albeit freaking annoying, I bet!)  I'm pretty sure I've seen charts on the FF chart gallery with spotting like you are experiencing.  If you don't think your doctor is being attentive to your concerns though, then it couldn't hurt to get a second opinion.

As for waiting until you've been TTC a year to begin investigating - that is pretty standard among a lot of doctors.  Many will see you sooner, though.  Are you going to see the same doctor you've been speaking of for your annual?  You should definitely share your concerns, ask if the spotting is anything to worry about, and ask again for a plan of where to go from here.  If you're not satisfied with his response, then you can always find another doctor.

Again, though, what you are describing doesn't sound like anything to worry about.  (Granted, I'm not a doctor :P)

    GL!

  • I have been off BCPs for a year and 6 months, my period is consistent although nothing like it was while on the pill. I have a day or two of light spotting, heavy flow for 2 days at the most, and then very light flow for 2 days max.
