Second guessing my Dr...

I started seeing my Dr. weekly last week at 28 weeks to be monitored.  The office that I go to there are two Dr.s, and they are husband and wife and I kind of see both of them...which is confusing enough for me.  I saw the woman Dr. a lot more in the beginning and she said when I got to week 20 for sure I was going to start seeing a Dr. in MFM, in which I did.  I saw this Dr. in MFM twice for anatomy scans one at 20 weeks and one at 24.  I was going to be seeing him again at 28 weeks.  The last month or so, every time I have went in to my regular  Dr. office, I have seen the male Dr. My last appointment he told me that I was stable and not showing any signs of complications, other than some contractions, which he said was "normal" for a multiple pregnancy.  He told me that he can do the anatomy scans himself and I wouldn't need to see the Dr. in MFM anymore and had my appointment for last week cancelled.  The female Dr. was so adamant in the beginning about me seeing this special Dr, and the male Dr. seems to think that it is no big deal.  I didn't think anything of it at first, but now it has kind of got me worried if I have enough eyes on me and my girls, specially since I am getting to the end. Did any of you not see a Peri during your pregnancy?

Re: Second guessing my Dr...

  • I didnt find out it was twins until 21 weeks.  and even after that i continued to see my regualr OB 1x a month i didnt start seeing him more often until 30 weeks.  At which point i went for NST 1x a week and visit to ob every other.

I never saw any specialists.  Both LOs came out very healthy.

  • That's funny, my 2 OBs are also husband and wife and 2 weeks ago one of them said, that because my boys are fine and no complications I could stop seeing the specialist and just see them for the ultrasound instead. I told them I really liked seeing the specialist and I'm already used to it since I've been seeing them since the beginning of my 20 week I think. Anyhow, they didn't go ahead and cancel my appointments without my permission but they did offer as well and I refused.

  • I saw the MFM one time for my 19 week level II.  Everything was perfect with my pregnancy, he didn't see any need for me to stay with him.  I loved my OB and was fine with staying with her.

I had gestational diabetes and PTL issues that I had to take terbutaline for, but nothing that my OB couldn't handle.

I went to the doctor enough as it was...twice weekly NSTs and a regular OB appointment/growth scan/fFN swab from week 32 on.  I'm glad I didn't have to see the MFM on top of that.

  • I have had no complications and I have seen my MFM every 4 weeks.  I think that it is a good idea to see a specialist unless your OB is an expert in high risk pregnancies.

  • I had no complications and carried to one day shy of 40 weeks. I only saw a regular OB for appointments, but the hospital where I delivered has a high risk obstetrics unit that does all of the NSTs and ultrasounds for high risk pregnancies, which includes any MoM. And I had all of my monitoring done by that unit, which is overseen by a peri for my entire pregnancy.

I would not be comfortable with your OBs decision if I were you.

  • If your OBs are not experts in multiple/high risk pregnancies- i would not feel confident only seeing them.

I saw the peri every 4 weeks during my pregnancy from 14 weeks on - for growth scans, cervix checks, etc.... I had no issues at all - but my OB (who is VERY experienced in twins) felt it was smart to go there for US's - b/c they do them all day long, have the best equipment, and know the most.... even though he could have done them himself.

Who cancelled your appointments? I would just make them myself - my OB had nothing to do with my appts with my peri - i made them myself...  so if you want to see the peri - i'd just make the appts.

  • I saw my regular OB except for NST which were done at the MFM center at my hospital. I felt comfortable enough that my OB had handled enough multiple births, and she sent me for more monitoring at the MFM center and L&D as needed.
  • I never saw a specialist until the last day when my regular OB was concerned baby A had stopped growing.  I was confident that she'd refer me to a MFM if she felt it necessary, and that's exactly what happened.  I was fine just seeing her.

  • I never saw anyone except my OB. I had a very uncomplicated pregnancy. He is one of the best in the city and experienced with multiples. If needed he would have referred me to someone else, but it wasn't needed and I felt confident with his care.

  • I saw an MFM twice, each time after a perfectly normal level II u/s.  I was glad to be on her patient roster, should I have needed it, but I was extremely comfortable with the care I received from my OBs.

  • i saw a peri as well as my regular OB. my OB did 'regular' preg stuff and my peri did all the scans and more in depth stuff. i was hooked up to a machine to check for contractions twice a week starting at 34 weeks to check for pre-term labor as well as twice a week U/S of them, measuring them, scans of them, and their HBs. i actually went into labor at my peri's. i had zero complications my whole preg. this was standard procedure at the peri. and attention i am positive i would not have gotten from my regular OB. my peri would have delivered me had they come before 32 wks. but we went til 36 wks so my regular OB did the delivery.

if you arent feeling comfortable with your OB's decision i would do some more research for yourself. ask your peri/MFM what they would do that would make it worth going that your OB doesnt do. ask your OB why they each feel the way they do. you are your babies only advocates. ask questions, speak up and decide for yourself. to me personally there is no such thing as too many people keeping an eye on my unborn babies. there are just too many things that can go wrong too quickly.

This is similar to my situation.  BUT, every time I read about someone with a major issue on here, I thank God that the 3 of us were OK.  If I had it to do again, I would see a peri, too.
