s/o elimination diets

hi ladies, mostly-lurker here, but would love some help/advice.

i suspect dairy is a no-no for my LO, but his pedi thinks it's reflux, put him on zantac, and said "he's just a spitty baby".

how do I tell whether dairy really is an issue?  I've tried to avoid milk proteins, but accidentally slipped up a week ago.  he spits up a TON and gets pretty uncomfortable until he does - should I see some improvement in a week or two, if I stay away from dairy and soy?   I think there is mucous in his poops, though I hadn't known to look for it before.  i don't think his poops smell weird though?  they smell as they always have...(then again, maybe they've always smelled funny, and I just don't know the difference?)

what else should I be looking for?   should i go ahead and avoid all the other foods too, or see how things look in a week or two first?

thank you!  I'd love to see my little guy feel better.

  • This is really hard.

I would try one thing at a time. It's really difficult to cut out major groups of food. There is a sample total elimination diet, maybe on kellymom.com, that cuts almost everything out then you slowly add things back in. Definitely takes dedication.

The mucus can be caused by the zantac, at least that's what my Pedi said so take it fwiw.

    Good luck & ((hugs))

  • DS has a dairy allergy and it causes asthma attacks in him.  He had a HUGE reflux issue as a young baby, had ear issues and fluid that wouldn't drain and wheezing, coughing, etc.  We cut out all milk products about  2.5 months ago and life is a million times better.  Did you just switch to cows milk?  Were you nursing of giving a milk based formula before?  I think that sometimes when we switch to cows milk we tend to still give milk in large quantities and it really isn't necessary or beneficial to the child.  I recommend cutting out the milk and then seeing how he feels.  It worked for us and can't hurt at all.  You can get calcium other ways
