When to do a registry?

This is my first child and I don't really know pregnancy "etiquette". We're beginning to find things we like for baby but I don't know if it's too early to start an official registry (more just to keep track of everything we're finding). Has anyone already started a registry? When would you advise creating one?

I started one a few weeks ago but only put the cribs and changing table I liked on there so I wouldn't forget/loose them.

I'm sure I'll add a few more "generic" things as we go along, but DH and I have a plan to make a day of our anatomy scan and after we find out the sexes we're going to lunch and then to BRU to add a bunch to the registry!

I made one with my first PG, but didn't make it public. Rather, it was nice to be able to get a good idea on the boards, save the item to my registry to consider later.

I started one already. I know things might change, but it helps me keep track of what I've looked at and researched. I don't register for stuff I haven't looked into.

It is nice to be able to keep track of everything on one place.

Unless it's for an exclusive online store wait till you know the sex and can register in store. Most will give you a gift type bag with coupons and samples when you in store register plus it's easier to go in store and start and add to it later online since some stuff online is not in store. Also fib on your due date. Most places give you a completion coup for 10 to 20% off everything left on your registry and teh coupons easier to use before baby arrives.

I started one a couple weeks ago. I started putting items that people highly recommended to me on there. Then today I went in and added onesie's, wipes and diapers (I read something somewhere today that most women don't register for diapers). I found a diaper bag at Target that I almost just bought, but figured if BRU had it then I'd just put it on my registry. They did... so that's all set.

I think if you start a list now, moreso with the knowledge that you don't forget some items, it's okay.

i think most people start registries after their 20-week anatomy scans since many people nowadays find out the sex of their baby at that point. that's what i did w/ DD. like wedding registries though, products go in and out of stock, so be prepared to be updating it alot if you start at 20 weeks and don't have a shower until, let's say 8 months along...

Thanks everyone! We're not planning to find out the sex of the baby so that's not really a factor. I went ahead and made one just for kicks --- and oh man! This is fun!! I forgot how fun a registry is!

Around the time your shower invites go out. Stock on certain things changes frequently. I think DH and I had most of the big stuff picked early but didn't go get the registry gun until the weekend before I knew the invites were going out.
