Trying to Get Pregnant

How long...

For those of you that had the Mirena IUD, how long did it take you to get your period after having it removed?

I asked my OB/GYN and he seemed to be very confident that I would have no trouble getting pregnant.  He said I should see my period "within 4-6 weeks, if you're not pregnant before then".

I had a little spotting/browning discharge about 3 days after I had it removed.  I only had it taken out on December 17th.  I always had a very regular period before I had son in May of 2008.  I had my IUD inserted at my 6 week check-up after my son was born and haven't had a period since then (almost 2 1/2 years).

Right now we're just having sex regularly, not charting and really not worrying about it too much since I just had it removed.  I just want to know the average time it took for your period to show back up after removal.

Also, for those of you who do the temping, if it takes me longer than expected to get pregnant, I would like to look into doing that, but I have a very weird schedule.  I work nights at a hospital, so I work 3 nights a week, but I keep a normal day schedule the 4 days that I'm off.  Is there another way to keep track of ovulation without temping?  I don't know if my weird schedule would make for very accurate temping.

 Thanks!

Re: How long...

  • Can't answer your question about the Mirena, but as far as determining O, temping is really the only way you can confirm O (aside from an ultrasound)

If you don't have the same schedule every day, just ensure you're temping after 3 solid hours of sleep. There are a few other ladies here that I believe have similar schedules, and it's not totally out of the question. Just try to be as consistant as possible about timing when you can.

You can temp with a shift work schedule, there is a section on FF that talks about it.  However, you can use OPKs and check your CM.  However, those only tell you your body is gearing up to O....they won't confirm you did.

As for the IUD, I'm not sure if it differs from other forms of BC but it can take upwards of a year to "get regular" again and as far as I know what your periods were like before children/BCP don't necessarily mean anything now.

  • I had my Mirena removed April 2009.  I got a period in May, then nothing till July, but I have PCOS.  As PP said it can take up to a year for your body to readjust after being on BC.

Your cycles can change after a pregnancy. Since I'm assuming your menstrual cycle hadn't returned by 6 weeks PP, you have no idea how "regular" you would or wouldnt be, and what your cycle length would be. Since Mirena is a hormonal form of birth control like KDG said it can take up to a year for your cycles to become what they would have been after your son was born, not what they were before.
