Trying to Get Pregnant

Will the number of boys/girls determine how many kids you have?

I feel like I worded that wrong. The Shettles post below got me thinking.

Lets say you have a boy and then a girl, will you be done? Or if you have 2 of the same sex will you try for the opposite?

Just wondering. My family thinks we're nuts because we (well, I do. DH is still undecided) want 3 regardless of whether the next LO is a boy or a girl. Why do people assume if you have one of each you're done having kids?

Re: Will the number of boys/girls determine how many kids you have?

  • I know I want more than 1 and would love to have at least one of each. But I don't think that in itself will determine how many children we'll have. DH and I will decide if we'll go for #3 (or more) when the time comes.

I once met a couple who wanted a girl so badly, but had 3 boys. They decided to go for just one more (hoping for a girl) and had triplet boys. Woops! ;p

  • We only want 2 kids. So I don't think it'll matter for us. Right now i'll just be happy with 1. I think we'll cross that bridge if we come to it.
  • I used to think about this ALL the time. But right now I would just be soooo happy with one! I never thought I would have any trouble ttc, and now that I am I plan to take whatever is given to me!  I do know that I don't want an only child (I come from a large family), so I definitely will try again if I can! After two, no matter the sex, it would depend on where we were financially and how difficult it was to get those two.

  • DH and I say that if we have 2 girls or 2 boys then we'll go for #3.  But truthfully, at this point (9 months trying) I'm just focused on getting baby #1.

  • If our next is a boy, we will try for a little girl for our third. But we are DONE with 3, if we get 3 boys. Thats GREAT but we would love 1 boy, 1 girl.

DH really wants a daughter, DS is a mama's boy through and through. DH wants a daughter, he wants the father daughter dance, he wants to walk her down the isle. I think he feels like if we don't have a daughter, he misses out on all these HUGE life moments. He loves our son, and he can't wait to coach little league and football.

Its actually really sweet, DH tears up during the father daughter dance scenes in movies.

  • DH and I are pretty set on only having one. BUT I know if the first one is a girl, I'm pretty sure he'll want to try again. But I guess we'll see.

This. We're coming up on the year mark ttc and don't feel any # pressures except for ONE.

    This is too cute

  • Nope. We only want 2.
  • We are two and done regardless of gender. We will either have two boys or a boy and a girl.

Surprise  Wow! That must have been a shock!

DH and I definitely want two kids and have talked about possibly having three. But gender won't determine how many we have. And at this point, I am worried enough about just having one.

  • We would love 3 kids, the sex of the babies wouldn't matter at all.... well, I say that now!  At this point, I just can't wait to have 1!!  We're also in our 30's so that will play a part in it.

  • DH wants to stop at 2 but would want to try for a 3rd if the first two are of the same gender.  I kind of want 3 or 4 kids but we will see what happens when it comes to it (financially wise).

  • Nope. We're planning on three, regardless. It may change depending on if we want more or less, but gender hasn't affected the # conversations. Although I do have to say DH really wants boys because he thinks he'll be overly protective of girls.

  • I think people assume having one of each makes a family "complete." For us, we want two, and though we'd like one of each, we wouldn't have a 3rd because we got two girls or two boys. If we decided to have a 3rd, it would be because we want another baby, not because we didn't get the sex we wanted.

  • We originally wanted 4, but I think now we're hoping for 2.  However, we have a little boy, and if we have another boy next, I think we'll try one more time. My husband REALLY wants a girl!

  • DH and I joked before we had kids that we would keep having them until we had one of each. Guess we don't have to have any more!

That's what people keep saying to us. "So you don't have to have any more right? You've got one of each!"

Yes, because children are like place settings.

  • We always joked before that we would have 2, and if they were the same gender, we would try for a 3rd to break the tie, BUT lately we have been talking about having 3 or 4 regardless of gender, but would love to have at least one of each....

  • DH and I always joke around that we'll try for a third if we have 2 of the same sex, but honestly, we'll probably still stop at 2 regardless of sex.  Plus, I'm 30 and I'd like to be finished having children by 35 and I think for myself, having more than 2 in 5 years would be insane!

  • I think finances play a bigger role than gender. We are still trying for number 1, but we are planning to have more than one. If we can afford it, I would love to have 3 or 4.

  • DH & I have always agreed that we want a big family, so we're hoping to have 4 kids. It doesn't matter sexes, although a mixture of boys & girls would be wonderful. DH says he has a feeling that we'll end up for 4 girls and he for see's being lost in a sea of tampons & barbies until he's 60 Stick out tongue
  • We want two kids, but we really want one of each.  So if we had two of the same, we might consider having another.  We have always been in love with international adoption, so if finances allowed, we would probably pursue that avenue for our third child.
