Vent about gift receipts

Why does no one give them?

My aunt and grandma go crazy every year buying toys for my kids.  It would be wonderful if they didn't buy the most age inappropriate, junky plastic stuff.  This year they bought every single Handy Manny toy on the market and they are for age 3+.  One of the sets has 45 small pieces, including screws and bolts, that will inevitably end up in my younger son's mouth at some point.

I don't mean to sound ungrateful, but they specifically call me every year and ask what they should get the boys.  I have learned from past Christmases, so this year I made a point of telling them the kids didn't need toys but would love puzzles, books, videos, and craft supplies.

But because there is no gift receipt I now ave $129 worth of junk that I don't want in my house.  Apparently Walmart doesn't have these items so I can't exchange them for anything else.  I am going to give everything to Goodwill.

Give gift receipts, people!!!

Re: Vent about gift receipts

  • Agreed. My IL's send us the strangest presents, all from stores they don't have within a 300 mile radius of where we live so there is no chance to return them. We always end up bringing them to our chinese gift exchange (where you regift terrible presents) every year.

It makes me feel so bad that they are spending their money on junk we don't -need/want, plus paying for shipping. It's such a waste!

  • We got this plastic race car set that says ages 4+ on it. Ummmm...what am I supposed to do with that? No gift reciept either so now we either store it or regift it to an older child. :sigh:

  • I am betting the Handy Manny set came from Target...maybe give it a try?

I know exactly what you mean though.

  • Yeah I don't get the point of people asking you what to get your kids, and then get them something different. Or in SIL's case, she asked BIL what to get for his one son. He gave her a list, so she picked something off the list. She gives it to him on Christmas Eve, and BIL says "Oh I already got that for him". Ummm don't give a list of ideas to people, if you are gonna go out and buy those same things! I hate my BIL. lol

When Gabe was a little over 1 this same aunt bought him a Home Depot tool bench with all of the tools.  It was 3+.  What is a one year old going to do with a play screwdriver besides poke himself in the eye?

  • Hmmm could you ask your mom if she can hint around and see where they got the gifts ?

We don't have a Target where we live, so it as to be either TRU or Kmart, neither of which will accept returns without a receipt.  :(

Oh well.  The boys don't really need any new toys, but it would ave been nice to exchange the stuff for some things for the new baby or some clothing items te boys do need.

  • Hmm too bad there isn't a polite way to ask for receipts.  Are you sure the stores won't do an exchange without a receipt ?  I understand money back but maybe an exchange.

Well almost everywhere (including places that say "no returns"...we were 3 for 3 with no receipts yesterday, Lowes/CVS/Kohls) will still give you store credit if it is an item in their system. If TRU is your option than that is probably it. They have lots of nice puzzles you could get in exchange. Just bring your ID.

I tried Kmart already and I know that TRU has a very strict policy.  I remember getting duplicates from my baby shower and they wouldn't let me return them without a receipt.

  • Is there anyway you could put the lot on ebay or on craigslist?  I always see toys there!!?

  • My sister sets up a "Wish List" at TRU every year for my nephews. Her IL's are 600 miles away and would inevitably buy crap if they didn't have the list. Helps me when I'm buying for them too!

  • My husband's Step-Monster gave us three pairs of used shoes that would fit a 5 year old.  They aren't hand-me downs, she actually went out and found them  somewhere.  I'm not storing them for 4-5 years so they're going to the Goodwill after I get off work today.

  • ITA. This year we received a tool bench and a play kitchen ... both of which are awesome, generous gifts ... and both of which we already HAVE. No gift receipt for either.

Both were purchased at Costco, which we don't have a membership to. Both of which will be sold to a consignment shop. So frustrating!
