TTC After a Loss 6 Months+

Acupuncture

Hey guys!  I have some questions for those of you doing acupuncture.  I found a local place that does acupuncture, they said that they do work with infertility.  It is $85 for the first appointment and $65 for the follow-ups.  Does this seem reasonable?  There is a place about 2 hours from me that is approved through my insurance (which should make it around $35 per visit) but they want the whole payment upfront $75 for the first visit and then $50 for each following visit.  What would you guys do.  They both do infertility treatments, I wish that there was a way to see which one was most successful.

I am still waiting on DH's opinion, but just wanted to see what you guys would do.

Re: Acupuncture

  • I paid 100 for the eval and now I pay 50 per visit. I feel so much more relaxed and calm doing it. I only go once a week so it's not that expensive. I would say one doesn't seem that much more expensive compared to the other. I would probably go to the one that's closaer because 2 hours is a long drive.

  • mine was a free consultation (with payment of first session) and my sessions were $40 each. (this cheapie price was only because it is a "community acupuncture" location - meaning there are multiple tables and they only do arms/shoulders/neck/legs/head - sounds strange but I would just make appts when no one else was booked, so was always alone). It was wonderful and I credit a lot of my relaxation and where I am now with it. Other, more traditional places in my area were about $60-80 a session.

for me, I wouldn't drive 2 hours just for lower price.

  • I would go to the closer place. The other place you would waste gas money and time traveling to.

  • Wow, I pay a lot compared to you guys! My consultation was like $160, and each appt is $80.  I'd go with the closer/cheaper place, for sure... at least to start.  If you don't love them, you can always try the other place.

I am saving 25% because she participates in a "wellness" program through my insurance. Part of the reason I picked her.
  • I think I paid $150 for my initial and then it's $75 per session.  But, they do have a pkg deal where if you buy 6 sessions together it comes out to about $60 per session.  I have done 1 initial, 1 pkg (I swear I got an extra session in) and I have paid for 2 individual sessions.  I was planning on buying another pkg this week, but she canceled my session b/c she was sick, so I will do that next week.

I try to go every or every other week, depending on where I am in my cycle.  For me it is ideal to go once or twice when follies are developing and at least once around 5-6 days after O (supposed to help with implantation).  I can tell you for my 2nd IUI, I lucked out and had an appt the night before my IUI and then I made the next one for like 5 days after.  I did get pregnant, but sadly it ended in a c/p.

With IVF I know they say it is really good to have it the day of your transfer - prior to and then again after - either that day or the next.

My acupunturist treats all kinds of issues, but fertility is one of her specialties.  I would go to the place tha is closest to you - it will make going to appt's easier.  Good luck!!

  • The first place I went was $85/$50 and I went twice a week.  She only did needles in my stomach (before O) and my back (after O).  Her goal was to reduce my FSH level.  I think she lowered it, but I had no success after going for 6 months.

The second place I went was $100/$85 (I think).  I went in specifically for her to get rid of my cysts, but also for any general fertility stuff she could do.  She practiced the Japanese style of acupuncture and I got needles in my ears, collar bone, arms, legs, and back.  She spent so much more time with me than the other one.  If you look at my chart from the month before this one you can see that my temps became much more stable immediately and my chart just looked more normal.

I would try the place closer to you first - driving two hours each way once or twice a week seems really inconvenient and you probably spend all your savings on the gas to get there.

Let us know how it goes.  Good luck!
