How long could you work?

Just wondering! I am very lucky that I work part time teaching dance. Not too worried about my minimal office time and kids classes but I also teach Zumba. Yeah, it is pretty high intensity for 55 minutes three days per week...wondering how quickly I should find someone to take over those classes?

Re: How long could you work?

  • I'm hoping to work all the way up until the babies come so I can take more time after. I'm very lucky to work from home so I'm off my feet all day so I *hope* I can work all the way up till!

  • I worked until the Friday before I was induced at 38w2d, but, like PP, I work at home. I worked from a reclined position on the couch for the last two months or so, and could take naps, rest, etc., whenever I needed to.

If my job was even remotely active, it would have been a very different story. I had contractions when I was active starting at 18 weeks, and when I say "active," I mean walking made my uterus act up.

  • I worked until 33 weeks. I was teaching Kindergarten at the time. I don't think I could have made it any further. It was very difficult to even walk down the hall.

  • I knew I could not go any longer and I decided to take my maternity leave early. My last day was on Friday....and my water broke that Sunday morning at 34 wks 1 day.
  • I had a pretty good pregnancy up until about 25-26 weeks. I was pulled out of work at 27 weeks because I started contracting and I was taking it easy at work at that point. I started training my temp at 25 weeks and was so glad I did! Every pregnancy is different, but I would advise you not to wait just in case you run into trouble early on like I did.

  • I am a teacher and the last day before Winter break (week before last) was my last day.  I was 32w 3d.  I'd been on a reduced work schedule for 3 weeks before that.  I would go ahead and have someone lined up to take your classes because you never know when your doctor could tell you that you are done working.  Plus, it's getting more and more difficult for me to get on and off the couch and in and out of bed, so I can't imagine teaching dance classes!

  • I worked until 37w2d. I was actively running/working out until 30 weeks. You should talk to your doctor about how long you can teach/do Zumba- thats pretty high intensity.

  • I'm still working....I am really considering leaving after this week. I work in the ER and although I am only doing triage at this point I am very tired and uncomfortable. My pelvis is killing me too!!!  I can't imagine doing any kind of exercise at this point! hahaha

  • I was still running through 14 weeks and spinning through 27/28 weeks. I swam until 32 weeks and then my OB shut down my physical activity because my cervix was funneling.

I don't know how far along you are, but some people are able to stay active through the end, others have CI issues and have to get off their feet earlier. It's hard to tell which side you'll fall on.

For me, keeping up with my exercise routine as long as I could was a must.

  • Thank you all! I had asked my dr previously (when we thought there was just one) and he encouraged me to keep teaching but I know we are in a whole new game now. I am going to try to make to to 18-22 weeks if all is well but will start looking for a replacement asap just in case. Thanks again!
  • I teach 3rd grade and was able to work until I was 36 weeks.  I then decided to stop working because I had such bad swelling in my legs that I couldn't stand, walk, etc.
  • I worked up until 32 weeks.  I started having small contractions so my OBGYN took me off work.  Let me tell you, I felt great and was very active.  Don't push it!  Everyone will tell you to take it easy and you won't feel like it, at least I didn't.  I was lucky and made it to 37 weeks.  Good luck!
