HELP: 39 weeks and a yeast infection! I'm going crazy!

I'm on day 4 of a incredibly uncomfortable yeast infection. I finally went to the pharmacy last night, but the pharmacist said not to take anything over the counter before I talk to my doc as I'm due so soon (thurs) and the baby shouldn't come into contact with the meds. However my doc's office is closed until tomorrow, ut with having a scheduled appointment already for wed, I doubt they will fit me in earlier. Eating a ton of yogurt has been doing nothing, and the only thing that helps (being in the shower) isn't a solution when I've got a 2 YO to run after all day.

What did your doc say to do? Anyone got a safe at home remedy to share? I think I'm going to go crazy!

  • You cant call the on call physician?

  • It sounds kind of gross but I have heard of putting yogurt with live cultures and no sugar into the vagina.  I have no idea how you would get it to stay up there though.  Maybe if you put it in right before going to bed?

  • My OB did an exam the last time I was in and said I had a small amount of yeast and that they can treat it but it is not a huge deal because it is not causing problems. She said they have to give an oral treatment, so the over the counter creams are not good. If it is really as bad as you say, you should call your on call doctor!

    Agreed.

I've waited so long as it is so dry here in Alberta my whole body has been itchy, and I didn't even realize it was a yeast infection until yesterday. But I should have thought of the on-call doc.

  • If not the on call Dr. then at least go to Urgent care or something.  Ew you waited 4 days?
  • My midwife said you can do a white vinegar rinse.
  • Oh man, I'm sorry!  I would definitely call the on call doc at this point.  I've had 3 yeast infections this pregnancy already and can understand where you wouldn't necessarily think it was a YI the first day or two until you are really uncomfortable.  Hope you get some relief!

  • I had a yeast infection last week at 36 weeks and they called me in a cream to use for 3 days...and it is gone. I was also told that you can use the over the counter meds but only half of the cream, The olny problem is that is could take up to 7 days for the over the counter creams? I have also gotten a pill one time and it worked awesome! GL
  • I seemed to keep a yeast infection with my last pregnancy.. This pregnancy i started getting them at about 29 weeks!! My OB put the on a 7 day cream.. Then I went out and got some probiotics and hav been taking them ever since and I havent had a problem! (knock on wood)

Get you some good pro-biotics but also see your doc so you can get this one cleared up before baby comes!

  • I have had 3 infections in my pregnancy. For the first two i did a 3 day over the counter, then for the last one at 38 weeks i did walgreens version of monistate 7 as suggested by my midwife. Doing 7 days sucked but my infection is gone and has no sign of coming back. good luck, i know your misery
  • I just got over a YI. I went to the on call dr and she gave me a pill, no creams for me.  I can't remember the name of the pill...you'll need a prescription for it but I was only on it for 3 days.

  • I might be too late for my response but I hope you see it. This is my  YI cure and it has worked EVERY time I've ever needed it. Including while I was pregnant!

Take a warm bath with a big scoop/cupful/few shakes of the box of baking soda. You will feel better almost immediately. Repeat that until it's gone. It's safe for you, for baby, and it's cheap.

I've been doing this for years after a GYN suggested it. I haven't needed to take any OTC or RX meds for a YI sinc I started doing this at the first sign of itchies.

GL! Hope you feel better soon.

Dang. I knew something seemed strange about putting Jello Pudding in my vag.

It's YOGURT in the vag. Should have known better.

  • I'm sorry you are miserable. Yeast infections are incredibly common during pregnancy.

I'm not sure what the big fuss and "gross" comments are all about? It was the holidays. Sometimes it takes awhile to realize what's going on.

Natural remedies DO include eating yogurt. I've also seen it recommended to use plain, unsweetened yogurt as a cream for your vagina. Gentian violet has long been recommended, but it turns everything purple and might not be as safe as was once thought.

Witch hazel soaked cotton balls may relieve itching. A hot bath, as hot as you can make it, along with half a box of baking soda will help reset the Ph in your vagina, but with an infection as far along as yours, it probably will only provide temporary relief. I've also heard that a cup of apple cider vinegar instead of the baking soda will do the same thing. DO NOT scratch ... you'll irritate the skin which will make it worse. Wear cotton underpants and change them if they are damp at all. Avoid eating sugar and drink a lot of water.

I'd call the on call doc and see if they will let you take a three day OTC cream ... if it's not resolved by the time the baby arrives, she may develop oral thrush from passing through the birth canal. That is easily treated after she arrives.

Don't let these girls make you feel bad about something you have really no control over.

  • Agree with Jenerally. And to the rest of you that are freaking out about how disgusting a 4 day old yeast infection is, best of luck with the bodily fluids that are just around the corner and for many years to come.

  • OK I am in the middle of dealing with some of this issue....First if left untreated and you deliver it will most likely pass to the baby and will result in thrush which is not a huge deal just a pain in the rear end.  I just had  surgery on an abcess and spent three weeks on antibiotics which resulted in a huge yeast infection that turned to a bacterial infection.  I used the three day cream on the advice of my doctor but did not catch it in time to prevent it from turning bacterial.  The bacterial is much more painful than the yeast so I hope yours doesn't turn that direction.  I would call the dr. on call asap I know how uncomfortable they are!!
