Do you have a 'bed time routine' for you LO?

Just wondering where the LO's at this stage in life sleep so much anyway if you actually have a bed time 'routine' and if so, what is it?  Do you keep them in their nursery from a certain hour forward each night?

Re: Do you have a 'bed time routine' for you LO?

  • I tried to get into "routine" at 5 weeks, before i went back to work, didnt work. I mean it did but, he still woke up. I just started again last night.

Around 7 after i eat dinner we have a little tummy time (to tire him out)

then 6oz bottle (he usually takes 4oz during the day. I try to bump it up so he will sleep.

then i give him a bath with johnsons bedtime bath (because it smells so good and really does work). I heard the target brand is the same thing and much cheaper. I got a huge bottle at my shower and still have a ton left.

then i lotion him down with johnsons bedtime lotion - put on warm pjs and put him in his swing. Hes not yet in his crib, mainly because im still too scared for him to sleep in his huge room by himself. He doesnt swing or even have the noises on, but its enough recline thats hes comfy cozy.

I dim the lights and turn the volume down on the tv. I then have a glass of wine, bump & facebook a little. shower myself & im in bed by 10. Im up at 430 to get ready for work. It seems to be working so far, but ive only been doing this since christmas eve!

  • ive been doing the same thing since LO was 4 days old but that does not mean he always cooperates, just trying to get him used to it.

around 7pm i give a bath and put on warm pjs or wrap him in a fleece swaddle. we read for 15 minutes in the rocker and i offer breastfeeding in bed in the dark until he falls asleep. the reading usually puts him straight to sleep and he wakes up to nurse for a few minutes and then is in a milk coma.

  • We haven't been at this very long, but we do have a routine that seems to work for us.

I feed DS around 7 pm and that usually takes between 30-45 min. After that we either put him in his swing for a while or do skin-to-skin because DH really enjoys that bonding time (as does DS). Then 8:30-8:45 we take LO in his room and turn on the nightlight and turn all the other lights off. We change his diaper, put him in either a thin onesie and swaddle him in his fleece Swaddle sack. Then we turn on the Sleep Sheep and sit quietly in the dark with LO for about 3-5 min listening to the Sleep Sheep until he starts getting blinky. Then we put him in his crib and quietly leave the room.

We've done this since the night we first brought him home and its always worked great. We do this for naps too and it always helps him drift straight off to sleep.

  • PP's: When you say bath, what does that entail? My pediatrician said to only give a bath once or twice a week because their skin dries out easily, esp. in the wintertime. What do you think?  Maybe it's because I live in CO, so high altitude and dry climate?

  • If he is awake at about 8-9 then we bathe him, massage him with lotion, get him dressed, play with him, then give him a bottle. By that time he usually is worn out. But not always. So we try, but I still feel that he is too young to rally get the hang of it.

  • I'm really interested to know how long your LOs sleep after these routines??

DS gets a bath, jammies, breastfeed at 7-8pm every night. He conks out immediately, but only for 40 min. Then he is up until around midnight, feeding every 1-2 hours. When he finally 'goes to bed', he is asleep for 2-3 hours, and then up every 1-2 hours after until about 7am.

We turn down the lights and the TV after his bath to let him know it is 'quiet' time, but that doesn't do anything for him at all. I wonder if I kept him in his room, in the dark, with no sounds, if that would make a difference?
