ICSI Advise

Hey ladies! So DH and I are doing IVF in Jan. Starting injections Jan 15th. We are trying to make a decision about whether to do ICSI or not. It would be an extra $2,000. We are not very wealthy... $2000 is a lot of money I think for anyone to be added on to the price of IVF. We talked to the doctor and he was kinda like "whatever" you want to do but he did say that he didnt think it was necessary... but then goes to say that it would probably give us more fertilized eggs. What do you guys think? We are so back and forth on it!

Re: ICSI Advise

  • I think if it would mean the difference between a 3 day and a 5 day it would be worth it.  Or if it meant you had frosties or not, it would be worth it.  While the $2000 is really expensive-if you didn't have a lot fertilize and had to do it all over again the cost would be larger in the long run.

If it were me-I'd do it.  I'd want to know that I did everything I could to make it work.

  • We did not all three times because:

    1. $3000 (at my clinic)
    2. no sperm issues
    3. $3000
    4. less manipulation, more "survival of the strongest"
    5. $3000
    6. result would be "maaaaaybe one or two more"
    7. $3000

You have until your ER to make the decision, so if it looks like you're responding well and will likely have a good amount of mature follicles at retrieval and no MF, I'd save the money. If you are doing one cycle, and one cycle only, or otherwise want to do everything you can to maximize your outcome, I'd spend the extra.

    GL with your decision.

  • This is such a tough call.  Going on our personal experience where we did not ICSI on IVF #1 (and weren't excouraged to) and had a horrible fert rate.  We will definitely be doing ICSI for IVF#2 and keep wondering if IVF#1 would have worked if we had done ICSI.  If I had it to do again we would definitely push for ICSI.  But $2000 (or $3000 or $4000 at some clinics) is a lot of $$$ and you may have a great fert rate without ICSI.  I think you have to go with your gut and decide what is best for you.

  • We are doing ICSI...we are already putting so much into this IVF (financially, emotionally, ect.) that I'd hate to leave any stone unturned, kwim? I want to give it everything we have.

Our RE absolutely recommended it for us even though we don't have sperm issues (DH did have low morph before his repair surgery but his morph is perfect now and he's always had good count and motility).

  • I agree that when you are spending so much money it's hard to not do everything possible to make the cycle the most successful. Like sing4mysavior said, she didn't have any known issues but then had none fertilize. My RE said rescue ICSI isn't their preference. They recommend doing ICSI on at least half the first time so you know you'll have at least half of your eggs to potentially fertilize if there are issues.

I agree. We did it and got pregnant (even though I miscarried), and had frosties. I would have wondered "what if" if we hadn't I think.  I know $2000 is ALOT of money, especially when you are already spending so much. Hope you guys can come to a decision you are happiest with xo

same...if you are spending all that money to begin with, just spend a little more for peace for mind to know that you did everything you could so you wont have the  "what ifs"
