3.5 yr old sleep issues...

We have a four month old that pretty much STTN. Our 3.5 yr old, on the other hand, is calling for us about 2 times a night. How do you put an end to this. He rarely comes out of his room (just calls out for us), but last night he came bursting into our room in the middle of the night and nearly gave me a heart attack. He's always been a crappy sleeper (didn't STTN until 14 mo.).

He usually just has to tell me something or his leg hurts and he wants medicine (that's another post entirely. : ) Why do they make the medicine taste so good?

Advice please...

Thank you!

  • Ignore it.  If he comes into your room, try not to talk to him.  Just take him by the hand and lead him back to bed.

The calling out for you I would absolutely ignore.  If it persists and is threatening to wake up the baby, I would go to his door and be angry and tell him it is nighttime and lie down and go to sleep.

Bedtime is all business for me.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am

  • griffin started having issues napping around 3 and a few months - so i made a lullaby mix on the iPod and started playing that for him - and it's helped a lot.

could you try something like that? or some sort of machine that he could press if he wakes up and needs help going back to sleep?  You can explain to him that night time is for sleeping and if he wakes up and can't fall back asleep he can turn on his radio toy.... or some sort of sleeping bear that lights up,e tc... something you can teach him to go to instead of coming to you.

Griffin was calling out for us like 3x's right after we'd put him to bed - so DH finally said "are you just saying your head hurts b/c you want another hug?" and he said "yes"... so DH would hug him- and say goodnight.... it only lasted another couple nights doing that- it was like Griffin just needed that extra confirmation that we are here for him.
